Russian Enlightenment differs from that of Western Europe /in its classical French version/ in chronology, in the ideals contained in the main doctrines and in the social function and, also, in the social groups, which adopted the ideology of Reason.
The state of the consciousness of the Russian nobility and the basic trends in its evolution are analysed in the work using the correspondence of the intellectual aristocracy of high society.
A textological analysis of letters by the nobility's Fronde made it possible to identify variations and changes of emphasis, digressions from the style and content of established stereotyped phrases and, in particular, the appearance of ethical definitions of concepts which seemed to be devoid of quality, to say nothing of moral grade.

The Making of a Russian Nobleman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Russian nobility of the eighteenth century played a major role in their country's development - not only as its leading class in the eighteenth century but also as the seed-bed of its cultural elite and intelligentsia in the nineteenth century.
Most members of the Russian nobility born towards the middle of the eighteenth century were born on the estates of their fathers.
In the absence of a clear legal definition of nobility, which resulted from the confusion caused by the conflicting claims of service and birth as the basis of noble status, participation in a cultured way of life came to be regarded as the real criterion.

Noblemen who were reckoned according to foreign rules had to confirm their nobility in the Russian Empire (to receive Russian nobility) to be included in the 4th Part.
The 1st Part listed families, to whom nobility was granted by Russian or foreign crowned persons, and their descendants.  People who had enough proof to be reckoned among  nobility and whose ancestors were not noble hundred years ago (or in 1785), were also listed here.
The provincial Noble Assembly decided if the documents were sufficient for confirmation and that there were enough documents.  They then sent the documents to the high institution of the Heraldry Department of the Ruling Senate.

Nobility In the Russian Empire could be attained through service to the Tsar, and that would seem to be the case here.
Having been born after the confirmation of his family as nobility, on the basis of Article 284 of Volume IX of the General Law on Social Status, issued In 1876, the above-named is confirmed as part of the nobility and is to be entered in the First Part of the Book of Noble Genealogies.
The non-entry of this family at the present time Into the official records of nobility indicates that the Kaunas Public office, that Is, the Assembly of the Nobility, regards the matter of the nobility of the Zukowsky family to have insufficiently accurate documents as presented by the family for consideration.

On a more practical level, she oversaw a major overhaul of Russian administration and the court system with the result that government business proceeded smoothly and the budget deficit was transformed into a surplus.
The other side of Catherine reflects, perhaps, her need to conform to the expectations of the Russian nobility if she were to survive politically as well as her desire to keep control of Russia in her own hands as much as possible.
Many in the Russian nobility disliked her, because (despite her outward embrace of Russian ways) she was a German, a loose woman (having had many lovers), and part of the Russian imperial family by marriage only.

Consequently, Russian annexation of the territories of former Poland and Lithuania in the 18th and early 19th centuries made room for a peculiar case of conflicting legislation, as the Russian laws forbade Moslems to have Christians as serfs or servants.
Finally, the Russian authorities refrained from altering the established traditions of the western Moslem aristocracy (which amounted to perhaps 200 families.) Satisfied with the loyalty of the western Moslem nobility, the Imperial authorities legitimized their exceptional status with a number of decrees and ad hoc edicts of 1840.
The Moslem nobility’s position in the southern regions of the Empire was clearly different from that in the European parts of Russia.

 Russian Serfs
By the end of the 16th century the Russian peasant came under the complete control of the landowner and during the middle of the 17th century serfdom became hereditary.
Most of these were the property of the nobility but large numbers were owned by the Tsar and religious foundations.
The nobility objected to this move but as Alexander told a group of Moscow nobles: "It is better to abolish serfdom from above than to wait for the time when it will begin to abolish itself from below.
