Rustavi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rustavi (Georgian: რუსთავი) is a city in the southeast of Georgia, in the province of Kvemo Kartli, situated 16 miles (25 km) southeast of the capital Tbilisi.
Old Rustavi adheres to Stalinist architectural style while New Rustavi is dominated by a multitude of seemingly endless stretch of depressing Soviet era block apartments.
The fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 proved disastrous for Rustavi, as it also caused the collapse of the integrated Soviet economy on which the city depended.

Georgia’s Rustavi Steel Works, a rusting monument to Soviet industrial might, has changed hands in a $27 million transaction that promises to fuel further controversy about President Mikheil Saakashvili’s campaign to turn state property into cash for government coffers.
Rustavi’s sale was originally promoted not as a bankruptcy auction, but as a likely crowning achievement of Georgia’s aggressive privatization process: a state conglomerate with $130 million in estimated debts would be sold for a hefty price, officials claimed.
But a mere week after the official announcement of Rustavi’s privatization sale in June 2005, the steel mill and all of its possessions were declared "unfit for rehabilitation" and ownership reverted to bankruptcy court.

Rolling Stone : The Rustavi Choir: Georgian Voices : Music Reviews
The twenty-two-year-old Rustavi Choir, Soviet Georgia's leading male choral ensemble, takes its sturdy repertoire from centuries of Georgian folk songs: tunes originally roared and rustled while villagers plowed fields or marched over mountains, got married or praised God.
According to Ted Levin, who with the Choir's founder, Anzor Erkomaishvili, chose Georgian Voices' 14 selections from a group of 100 such recordings released in their home country, only the mealtime songs still are sung with any frequency by contemporary Georgians.
But as the recent release of Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares, by the Bulgarian Women's Choir, and Ryuichi Sakamoto's 1988 Neo Geo indicate, many Europeans and Asians don't easily let go of their song ancestries; the tunes are kept alive by musicians who go on singing them as though they never faded from use.
