  Rutan VariEze
Rutan was eager to use N7EZ to explore further the performance of the canard layout.
Rutan redesigned the canard, as well, and employed a new airfoil for this wing that aerodynamics specialists had developed at the University of Glasgow.
Rutan surveyed the builders in April 1978 and discovered that the average, finished airplane was 14-23 kg (30-50 lb) heavier than specified in the plans.

 Rutan Aircraft Designs
Rutan's most expensive project, the Beech Starship was just one in a series of experimental and unique aircraft designs that are his trademark.
Rutan's creative vision led to the formation of his own Rutan Aircraft Factory in 1974 to design and market innovative canard designs for home-built light aircraft such as the VariEze and the Long-EZ.
Burt Rutan expanded his successful experiments with composite materials to larger-scale projects with the formation of Scaled Composites, Inc., in 1982, for the design, fabrication, and flight testing of prototype aircraft projects for both the government and private industry.

 Rutan VariEze Kit
Rutan's VariViggen bears more than an accidental resemblance to a Swedish military jet fighter, the SAAB J-37 Viggen, which first appeared during a press preview in 1965 and helped to inspire Rutan to create a canard airplane of his own design.
Ironically, Rutan selected a less complex and less expensive variation of this 'composite' construction method to build the first VariEze because it allowed him to change the airframe quickly.
Rutan decided to redesign the rear wing to incorporate ailerons but to keep the elevator control in the canard.

 Rutan VariEze at AllExperts
The Rutan VariEze is a composite, canard aircraft designed by Burt Rutan.
The Varieze is notable for popularizing the canard configuration and moldless composite construction for homebuilt aircraft.
Three months later, it was shown at Oshkosh, where Dick Rutan piloted it to an under 500 kg class distance record of 1638 miles.

 Rutan VariEze
The VariEze is a fairly high-performance homebuilt, hundreds of which have been constructed.
The first prototype, N7EZ, was shown at Oshkosh in 1975, where Dick Rutan piloted it to an under 500 kg class distance record of 1638 miles.
Rutan's stated goals for the design included reduced susceptibility to departure/spin and efficient long range cruise; these goals were achieved.

Hallmarks of Homebuilding - Lou Stolp's Idea: The One-Stop Shop
Rutan’s prototype VariEze also demonstrated tremendous efficiency, achieving 70 miles per gallon with two people aboard at a cruising speed of 135 mph.
Burt Rutan pushed the imagination of what was possible in aircraft design and performance and brought it to the homebuilder.
Rutan’s new design was one of the first aircraft to fly with the Whitcomb Winglets.

 Rutan VariEze Prototype
Rutan was already well known among experimental aircraft enthusiasts for his VariViggen—a two-place homebuilt design based loosely on the Saab 37 Viggen jet fighter.
Rutan originally intended to use N7EZ only as a research aircraft for testing canard designs and configurations.
Rutan and his company, Scaled Composites, came to worldwide attention in 1986 when his Voyager aircraft completed the first non-stop, non-refueled flight around the world.

 Sun 'N Fun
The Model 31 Varieze is another very successful Burt Rutan design, with his signature canard pusher.
One of the foremost selling points of the Varieze is its ease and speed of construction, when compared to some of the other homebuilts, some of which, for the average homebuilder, have taken as long as 10 to 14 years to build.
In 1977, builders were equipping their newly constructed Varieze's with 0-200 engines as our example has.

Burt Rutan (Rutan VariEze and Voyager, see NASM collection) assisted Jewett and Sheehan in the design work and the first Quickie was finished, tested in flight, and ready for a public introduction by April 1978.
The layout almost qualifies the aircraft as a biplane with tremendous negative stagger between the upper and lower wings.
Rutan envisioned powering the Quickie with an Onan industrial generator engine that developed 22 horsepower but many builders found this motor too weak.

 About Rutan Aircraft Factory, Inc.
Then, in June 1974 Burt Rutan left his job at Bede Test Center, moved his family to Mojave, California and started Rutan Aircraft Factory (RAF) in order to develop a non-conventional research aircraft he had designed while still in college-the VariViggen.
In April 1982, Burt Rutan founded Scaled Composites, Inc. (Scaled) to develop research aircraft.
While aircraft plans are no longer available to the public, RAF will continue to support, for some limited time, the individuals who have already purchased plans and are in the building process.

The VariEze is one which does not have all 8 views...
This is because (a) many folks who are building and flying these planes are spending their money on their airplane, and not on their computer, so files need to be kept small and fast, and (b) with the VariEze's full canopy and narrow fuselage, there isn't much airplane there in views out the sides.
