		It is the capital of Rutana Province, one of the 17 provinces of Burundi.

	BURUNDI: UN statement on Rutana incident [19991013]
		At the request of Government authorities and on the basis of reports of a worsening humanitarian situation, an inter-agency emergency humanitarian evaluation mission was undertaken to Rutana, a province in south-eastern Burundi, on Tuesday, 12 October 1999.
		The mission was then to proceed to the Governor's office in Rutana to discuss the overall situation as well as action to be taken by the humanitarian community.
		From Sosumo, the incident was reported to members of the UN Country Team in Bujumbura, who arranged for the WFP plane to return to Rutana to pick up the bodies and the remaining members of the delegation and bring them back to Bujumbura.

		As soon as they disembarked from their vehicles, shooting broke out and UN members of the team were made to sit against a wall where they were robbed of their belongings.
		Minani blamed the incident on rebels of the Forces pour la defense de la democratie (FDD), assisted by Rwandan Interahamwe militia and ex-FAR members, who were hiding among the population.
