Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a leading national research university and is unique as the only university in the nation that is a colonial chartered college (1766), a land-grant institution (1864), and a state university (1945/1956).
Rutgers was among the first American institutions to engage in intercollegiate athletics, and participated in a small circle of schools that included Yale University, Columbia University and long-time rival, Princeton University.
Today, Rutgers University is a member of the Big East Conference, (in football since 1991, all other sports since 1995) a collegiate athletic conference consisting of sixteen colleges and universities in the Northeastern and Midwestern United States.

Six individuals and one team comprise the inaugural class of the Rutgers University-Camden Athletic Hall of Fame.
Heading into the Hall of Fame are former basketball stars Ray Pace and Karla Robinson, three-sport star Tara Harris (basketball, softball, tennis), baseball pitcher Garland “Gar” Miller, and the late Barry Millett and Wilbur “Pony” Wilson.
Those individuals will be inducted along with the 1977 men’s soccer team which reached the NAIA National Soccer Tournament and finished sixth in the country.
