The county was formed in 1779 from the western part of the former Tryon County.
Rutherford County is a member of the Isothermal Planning and Development Commission regional council of governments.
In the county the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 16.00% who are 65 years of age or older.

Tryon County is a former county located in the state of North Carolina.
It was formed in 1768 from the part of Mecklenburg County west of the Catawba River, though the legislative act that created it did not become effective until April 10, 1769.
On August 14, 1775 49 Tryon residents gathered at the county courthouse and issued a declaration of grievances against the British known as the Tryon Resolves.
