The parish church stands near the spire of the ancient church where, according to tradition, the treaty was made in 1297 with Edward I., by which Sir John Menteith undertook to betray Wallace to the English.
Rutherglen was erected into a royal burgh by David I.

Labour MSP Janis Hughes was born in Glasgow in 1958 and educated at Queen's Park School and Glasgow School of nursing.
He was a Glasgow District councillor from 1977 until 1992 and stood in five Westminster elections in Rutherglen in October 1974, 1979, 1983, 1987 and 1997 and the Scottish parliamentary election in 1999 where he was elected as a Glasgow Region MSP.

 Rutherglen
Rutherglen received the title of Royal Burgh in 1126 by Royal Charter from King David I of Scotland who ruled from 1124 - 1153, and was an important center for trading long before Glasgow.
In the 19th century Rutherglen was widely known for the many horse fairs which were held regularly in the town, hence the reason for the extremely wide pavements and main street, still existing today.
In 1679, the Covenanters, a group of Presbyterians bound by oath to sustain each other in the defense of their religion, signed the "Rutherglen Declaration" to support the Protestant effort to seize power in Scotland, and around 1500 of them marched to engage the Government Dragoons at Drumclog.

This site is generally intended to be all about Rutherglen and surrounding district - or at least as much about it as I am able to provide.
The ‘Rutherglen’ we’re concerned with here - the original one - lies on the south-eastern fringes of The City of Glasgow and is the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland.
For long it was also a fishing village, and to this day residents of the Burgh have retained the right of passage, without hindrance, down the River Clyde to the sea and back – as enshrined in King David’s Charter.

Rutherglen lies on the outskirts of Glasgow and is the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland.
It is a focal point for the neighbouring communities of Cambuslang, Halfway, Burnside, Cathkin, Springhall, Fernhill, Spittal, Bankhead and Toryglen - a satellite housing estate along to the west - as well as Carmunnock, a sleepy village snuggling to the south on the other side of the Cathkin Braes.

In Rutherglen, however, the SSA only took 251 votes, less than the 315 which Rosie Kane obtained in the Toryglen local by-election.

In the club 1983 hosted possibly the last international match on grass in Scotland when Scotland Ladies played Ireland.
