 Southern Cross Windmills
Also in 1902, Mr Bert Griffiths who had been a railway wagon and carriage builder at the Foundry was sent to the Show Grounds with Mr Ernie Hindmarsh, still employed in the company's tool shop, to erect two of these 'Zephyr' windmills.
The firm commenced business in 1871 when George Washington Griffiths opened an ironmonger's shop in Ruthven Street, Toowoomba.
The history of the Toowoomba Foundry is worthy of description because it depicts the pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit of the Griffiths family, it continues to be deeply immersed in the economic evelopment of the Darling Downs, and it reflects the tenacity of an organisation to survive and prosper after 112 years of fluctuating circumstances.

As late as the 1940s, Macleod was more a country town township than a suburb, even though it lies no further from Melbourne than Box Hill or Brighton Beach.
That same shop did a brisk trade on fine Sunday afternoons, selling sweets and snacks to visitors from distant suburbs before they walked from the station uphill to Mont Park Mental Hospital, there to sit in the grounds with sick relatives.
From a building that still stands near Macleod station, a grocer did his home deliveries in a horse-and-cart for miles around.

 Reservoir, Victoria
Ruthven, with a railway station (1963) and a primary school (1968), was named after William Ruthven, V.C. winner, France, 1914-18, and local State parliamentarian (A.L.P) 1945-61.
Despite the spread of housing in Reservoir the only shopping centre of any size is the original one near the railway station, dating from the 1920s.
When the railway was opened between Collingwood and Whittlesea, with a station at "Preston (Reservoir)", in 1889, there were still many unfilled residential allotments southwards in Preston before homebuilders needed to move to Reservoir.

Did You Know? - Scottish Placenames in Melbourne, Australia
Glen Waverley (Waverley railway station - named from the Sir Walter Scott novels) There is also a Waverley Abbey in Surrey, an English Heritage site.
But Ian Kendall, who now lives in Melbourne, has been researching more deeply into Scottish placenames around the world and he has produced an impressive list of the suburbs of a number of towns and cities with Scottish connections - this page covers Melbourne.
Although this name also occurs in northern and central England, the Melbourne suburb was actually named for an estate in Berwickshire, a former county that now forms part of the Scottish Borders.

 Memoirs of Richard Symes Alford
Joe Wonderley’s chemist shop in Ruthven Street up near to James Street, was the rendezvous for bank managers and other leading men whose pastime was gambling by the aid of cardboard racecourses and toy racehorses, assisted by dice.
The most striking feature about Dotswood head station, to my mind, was the beautiful mandarin orange tree which was then fully bearing and a pretty site to see, the largest tree of the kind that I have seen.
From that time until his death in 1884, my father carried on an auctioneering business at Toowoomba, firstly at the Argyle Sale Rooms and Yards, in Ruthven and Margaret Streets, just opposite the present Club Hotel.
