Rutland has a somewhat interesting history relating to roads, in which connection the recollections of Washington Tucker are appropriate.
The inhabitants voted a bounty of $10 on wolves in 1803, '7, '8 and '14, and of $15 in 1805 and 1806.
The N. church in Rutland dates back in its history to about 1806 when a meeting house (said to have been the second in the county) was built in Rutland Hollow, a short distance north of the point where the Black River road leaves the Rutland Hollow road.

Almost immediately a controversy arose with New York claiming the same land grants under the name of “Socialborough.” This controversy ultimately led to the Vermonters forming the Republic of Vermont from 1777-1791.
Rutland has continued to grow in industry and population to become the largest city in Southern Vermont.

WOODFORD — A motor vehicle accident June 30 has resulted in criminal charges against two New York state residents, according to Vermont State Police.
Police said that Christopher Lodge, 29, of Clifton Park, N.Y. was traveling west on Route 9 in Woodford in a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus when he crossed over into the eastbound lane just east of Notch Road, striking a 2004 Volkswagen Passat with New York City resident Harold Nue, 39, at the wheel.
Lodge and his passenger, Clifton Park resident Dustin Lane, 23, as well as Nue and his passengers, fellow New Yorker Fiona Watt, 40, and her three children (ages 6, 4 and 1) were all taken to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
