Wines of Germany | Destination Germany | Wine Regions: Mosel-Saar-Ruwar
The Mosel River is the sinuous spine of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region, changing direction so often as it flows northeast toward the Rhine that it meanders nearly 250 km/150 miles, to cover about half that distance as the crow flies.
Although each river's vineyard area produces a wine with its own distinctive personality, the three share a family resemblance: a fragrance reminiscent of spring blossoms, a pale color, light body and a refreshing, fruity acidity.
Along the serpentine route of the Mosel, the river banks rise so sharply that the vineyards carpeting these slopes are among the steepest in the world, with some planted at an astounding 70-degree gradient.

It is situated on the western bank of the Moselle River in a valley between low vine-covered hills of ruddy sandstone.
Not touched seriously by the invasion of the Huns under Attila in 451, Roman Trier was invaded by Germanic tribes from 350 on.
But when the Roman army withdrew from the border along the Rhine River at the beginning of the 5th century, it left the empire unprotected and the Franks sacked Trier in 410/11, 413, 419/20 and 428 or 435.

 Mosel-Saar-Ruwer
The Saar and the Ruwer, both of which flow north instead of west, and which therefore have fewer south-facing slopes, are colder.
The towns are crammed into the small strip of flat land between slopes and river, and the vineyards extend in an almost unbroken wall along the banks.
The Ruwer river is north of Trier and produces slightly softer wines; if no village names stand out here there are a few estates (Maximin Grünhaus, Karthäuserhof) which are on every list of the best in Germany.

 German Wine Guide: The Ruwer
The Ruwer joins the Mosel only a few miles downstream from where the Saar flows in, and so we are still quite far up the valley of the Mosel here; this has an obvious effect on the temperatures, which are cooler than for much of the Mosel.
Even though the Ruwer is only a short distance downstream, that does mean the altitude is a little lower than the Saar; and the vineyards are sheltered by the surrounding hills, many of which easily top 300m in height.
Another similarity between the Ruwer and the Saar is that many of the vineyards here run up the valleys of the tiny streams that feed down into the Ruwer, the vines performing best on those slopes that have a more southerly exposure.

The valleys of Germany's Saar and Ruwer rivers may seem out of the way, both geographically and in terms of general renown, but many of the wines they produce are truly out of this world.
This last looping portion of the river valley is full of paradoxes - of cool, late springs and sudden frosts, of meadowlands, forests and fruit trees, of hard, compacted slate soils and the lush foliage of grapevines.
Owing to the rather direct course of its namesake river, most of the Ruwer's vineyards are oriented as much as is possible toward the south, occupying slopes off to either side of the main valley.

This enchanting region is located in the western part of Germany and goes along the course of the Mosel river from the point in which enters Germany, in the borders of France and Luxembourg, to the neighboring of the city of Koblenz where the river joins the Rhein.
The best vineyards, besides being planted in slopes towards south, are also found near the course of the Mosel river, a condition which contributes to the increasing of the quantity of sun in vineyards thanks to the sun rays reflected by water.
Ruwer is a pretty small area and generally suffer from the same problems found in Saar, that is ripeness of grapes is a condition which is not ensured every year because of the low quantity of sun rays.
