Easy Guide to the Ruy Lopez
Easy Guide to the Ruy Lopez is John Emms' 1998 repertoire book on 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 from White's point of view.
The Lopez tends to be covered in bits and pieces, so this is a much-needed contribution.
First, there are several occasions (just for example, in the Open Ruy) in which Emms, to his credit, tells of a suggested improvement for Black; but he doesn't then offer a White move in response.

Writing about the Ruy Lopez, it is all too tempting to include the same Kasparov-Karpov games (and don’t forget one or two Capablanca efforts) upon which the theory was based for years.

The book is therefore mainly aimed at players who already have a defence against the Lopez, and who want to fill in the gaps if White surprises them earlier on.
Emms recently wrote a book on the Ruy Lopez from White’s point of view, so it wouldn’t have been too difficult for him to research a Black defence; I honestly think that the decision to exclude the Ruy Lopez from this book was a well-considered one.
But this could not be avoided when the possible readership is as broad as it is in this case (in my opinion, 1500 players up to grandmasters will gain a lot from this book).
