Potatoes are grown as a spring (double) crop in the Cereal Bowl region, and as a summer crop in the cooler northern highlands (Jagang, Ryanggang), where a shorter growing season is experienced.

But officials of South Korea and the U.S. said that the ``mushroom-like'' cloud that was reportedly spotted along with the blast was not caused by a nuclear explosion.
