Rybinsk is one of the oldest Slavic settlements on the Volga.
As a trade capital of the Upper Volga, Rybinsk formerly attracted scores of foreigners, who built a Lutheran church and an imposing Roman Catholic cathedral, said to be the tallest on the Volga.
As the experts warn, the giant Rybinsk dam, which holds the Rybinsk Reservoir (formerly touted as the largest man-made body of water on Earth) places the town in the imminent danger of the dam breaking and the reservoir flooding the city.

The Rybinsk Reservoir, informally called the Rybinsk Sea (Rybinskoye vodokhranilishche), is a vast water reservoir on Volga River and its tributaries Sheksna and Mologa.
The dam in Rybinsk was constructed in 1941, but the reservoir was not filled until 1947.
Today the dam is less important for electricity supply than it used to be, but the ecological damage caused by the reservoir is being re-evaluated and many find it to be very great.
