In 1377 a French attack depleted much of Rye's resources and over the next few centuries the town's fortunes fluctuated, largely affected by the forces of nature as the sea began to recede and the relentless silting of the estuary changed the nature of the harbour.
Notwithstanding this, Rye was still a trading port of importance and in the 19th century was the centre of the ship-building industry;warships for the Crimea set sail from here.
As an important Cinque Port Rye smugglers were treated with leniency; a contributing factor being the covert involvement of many corrupt town officials who benefited from the affordable goods these mewn provided.

September is a good month for seeing birds of prey at Rye Harbour, as it is a time when both departing summer visitors and arriving winter residents supplement those species found here all year.
Honey Buzzard seen in flight over Rye Harbour village and the Beach Reserve on the 14th of the month, a very scarce visitor indeed!
Cost is £6 inc. pandp and all proceeds go to the Friends of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and so will benefit the wildlife of this special area.
