Ryegrass - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ryegrass (Lolium) is a genus of nine species of tufted grasses, family Poaceae.
Ryegrass should not be confused with Rye, which is a grain crop.
Ryegrasses contain some species which are important grasses for both lawns, notably at The Championships, Wimbledon, and as pasture and hay for livestock, being a highly nutritious stock feed.

Ryegrass Temporary Sports Turf for the South
Ryegrasses are widely used as a temporary turfgrass throughout the southern region for overseeding dormant warm season grasses.
Ryegrasses are noted for their fast establishment rate and are primarily used for temporary cover in the South.
Ryegrass is the least drought tolerant of the southern turfgrasses and needs frequent watering in the spring and early summer.

Cover Crop Database: Complete Crop Summary of Annual Ryegrass
Annual ryegrass seed germinates quickly (McLeod, 1982; Peaceful Valley, 1988), and the species is known for rapid growth (McLeod, 1982) and ease of establishment even during cold weather (Miller et al., 1989).
When ryegrass is used for over-seeding bermuda, the mower should be lowered to one inch cutting height in the spring to kill the ryegrass and leave a clean stand of bermuda.
Annual ryegrass is often grown in conjunction with crimson, alsike, or arrowleaf clovers (Miller, 1984).

 Ryegrass - Agronomy Facts 19
Ryegrasses grow best on fertile, well-drained soils but can be grown on soils where it is too wet at certain times of the year for satisfactory growth of other grasses (Table 1).
Ryegrasses are heavy users of water and their performance is less than optimum during a drought or periods of extended low or high temperatures.
Ryegrass may be seeded alone; however, to improve hay yields when growing ryegrass, a mixture with a legume is recommended.

GRDC - Advice Sheets - Managing ryegrass seed banks (Feb 2003)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The groups developed a systematic process where paddock core samples taken in autumn were assessed in the laboratory with the number of weed seeds per square metre becoming the key performance indicator to determine the success of management practices in the previous season.
First year pastures tend to be less competitive than ryegrass and growers were often reluctant to heavily graze or spray-top these pastures because of the need to maximise pasture legume seed set.
Crop competitiveness and sequences "Blow outs" in the ryegrass seed bank in cereal paddocks were often associated with the poor competitive ability of the cereal crop grown.

Ryegrass, Small Grains, and Tall Fescue
The cool-season grasses (ryegrass, rye, wheat, oats, triticale, and fescue) provide valuable winter and spring grazing when the warm-season perennial grasses are not growing.
The peak season of growth is later than that of rye, and a mixture of rye and ryegrass is widely used by cattlemen since it extends the grazing period of either forage planted alone.
Ryegrass is often overseeded into dormant bahiagrass or bermudagrass at later dates than when planted on prepared land.

 Ryegrass
Ryegrasses (both annual and perennial) can be grown on their own in the northern states for lawns.
Ryegrass is one of the few "throw and grow" seeds that can be sown without the hassle of tilling, scarifying, or digging into the soil and destroying any of the permanent ground covers already in place.
The ryegrasses are well known for being companion grasses in mixes of fescue, clovers, timothy, orchard grass and many other pasture crops.

 Annual (Italian) Ryegrass
Annual Ryegrass is quite similar to Perennial Ryegrass except it is an annual or biennial, depending on climate and/or length of growing season.
Annual Ryegrass is a bunch-grass, with numerous long, narrow, stiff leaves near the base of the plant.
In general, the Annual Ryegrass component of a mix should be 20% or less since it is very competitive, due to rapid germina-tion and good seedling vigor.

 Perennial Ryegrass
Ryegrass has a rapid growth rate in the spring and requires twice weekly mowing at the taller heights - above 1"; mowing at 2 — 3 day intervals at heights around 1" and daily mowing at heights below 1".
In warm climates, perennial ryegrass is used as a temporary "winter green" grass for overseeding established warm season grasses, especially zoysia and bermuda, in early fall.
Like all grass seeds, perennial ryegrass will not germinate unless the seed is in direct contact with moist soil after mowing, gradually fill them in with small amounts of soil, until they are raised to the level of the rest of the lawn.

Ryegrass   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Ryegrass is a very fine textured grass that has blades with shiny undersides, two characteristics that make it very desirable for use as turf grass.
Ryegrass germinates and establishes very quickly and thus provides a quick cover on areas that are susceptible to erosion.
The seed of ryegrass looks very similar to the seed of Tall fescue however, the rachilla of ryegrass has a flattened wedge shape while the rachilla of Tall fescue is more rounded and swollen in appearance.

 Overseeding with Ryegrass
Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) are generally used to overseed dormant warm-season lawns in South Carolina.
Although cheaper, annual ryegrass is a second choice to perennial ryegrass, since perennial ryegrass has more desirable turf characteristics.
Ryegrasses should only be used in South Carolina for overseeding in the fall.

Annual Ryegrass - PNW Extension Publication
Although somewhat less tolerant of severe and frequent defoliation than perennial ryegrass, annual ryegrass is relatively tolerant of defoliation as long as at least 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7 cm) of stubble remains after harvest, and regrowth periods are at least 3 weeks long.
Because lolitrem B concentrations in endophyte-infected ryegrass plants are highest in the leaf sheaths and lowest in leaf blades, the staggers syndrome is seen most often in closely grazed pastures.
Leaf blades of annual ryegrass are rolled in the bud (in contrast to those of perennial ryegrass, which are folded).

 AGR-179: Annual Ryegrass
The leaves of annual ryegrass are dark green and shiny with smooth edges and clasping auricles.
Annual ryegrass should not be seeded into a thick, vigorous stand of a cool-season perennial grass, such as tall fescue, because competition will be excessive for the seedling annual ryegrass plants.
Since annual ryegrass recovers quickly after grazing and is very productive during spring when stocking rates are not high enough to utilize growth, harvesting some paddocks as hay or haylage may be necessary.
