Der 1938 in Kobe geborene Noyori studierte und promovierte an der Universität Kyoto (1967).
Als Post-Doktorand ging er 1969 für ein Jahr an die renommierte Harvard University in Cambridge (Boston), kehrte dann aber dauerhaft in seine Heimat zurück.
Reisen zur Ehrungen oder Gastprofessuren, wie nach Heidelberg, tritt er gern gemeinsam mit seiner Frau Hiroko Oshima an, mit der er zwei Söhne hat.

Professor Gilbert Stork, octogenarian Professor Emeritus from Columbia University, was conferred the Ryoji Noyori Prize in honor of his outstanding lifetime contribution to research in asymmetric chemistry on February 18, 2004.
The Ryoji Noyori Prize was established in 2002 by the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan (SSOCJ) to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Society and the bestowal of the 100th Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Professor Ryoji Noyori.
The Takasago-sponsored awards ceremony and commemorative speech were held at the KKR Hotel Tokyo at the 67th annual general meeting of the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan.

Ryoji Noyori has spent more than 40 years in selfless devotion to science, engaged in work that has yielded substantial technical advances with highly practical implications.
During the 1970s, Noyori's pioneering research yielded a new molecule called BINAP, whose properties opened up new possibilities in chemistry and chemical engineering, and made existing processes more efficient.

El fallo especificó que el 50 por ciento del premio será para Knowles y Noyori "por su trabajo sobre reacciones de hidrogenación catalizadas por quiralidad (condición de no identidad de un objeto con su imagen en el espejo)".
Knowles, Noyori y Sharpless "han desarrollado moléculas que pueden catalizar importantes reacciones de manera que sólo se produce una de las formas moleculares reflejadas", añadió.(EFE)
