Ryozen Town, a small, peaceful place, was once a proud castle town with a long military tradition.
Several young lads, the Ranjo-burakutai, perform a ritualistic dance to enter the shrine, to the accompaniment of Japanese flutes and taiko.
The latter form is said to have originated in Ryozen Town.

A Japanese Communist Party member was elected as mayor of Ryozen Town in Fukushima Prefecture on July 7.
Supported by a group of residents, candidate Ohashi Yoshihiro, former JCP member of the Ryozen Town Assembly, got 4,092 votes and defeated Tonegawa Yasunori, former town assembly chair and construction company president, who got 2,456 votes.
In the July 7 mayoral election in Ryozen Town in Fukushima Prefecture, Japanese Communist Party member Ohashi Yoshihiro beat a conservative candidate Tonegawa Yasunori backed by the Liberal Democratic Party by a wide margin.

Abstract: The paleomagnetic studies which have been performed in the forearc side of NE Japan during the last decade are reviewed in detail to elucidate the Miocene rotational process of NE Japan.
The areas which are dealt with in this review are as follows; from north to south, Ninohe, Miyako and Kamaishi Mine in Iwate Prefecture, Shiogama-Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture, Ryozen in Fukushima Prefecture, and Motegi over a Tochigi-Ibaraki prefectural boundary.
We have compiled reliable paleomagnetic directional data from the areas and established variations in declination and inclination with age.

The Fukushima Waraji Matsuri or Straw Sandal Festival will take place in downtown Fukushima City on Route 13 on the nights of August 1st and 2nd.
The first day has a huge parade and the second features a race where groups drag huge waraji as well as the Peach Samba dance.
The fantastic Ryozen Taiko Matsuri will be held from August 1st to 2nd at the Ryozen Kodomo Mura, or Children's Village.
