Concern for the secrecy of the ryuha's teachings was paramount to all organizations, but of particular worry to the bugei ryuha, since the techniques in which the students were being instructed were potentially lethal.
Katas are the compendiums of the waza of the ryuha.
This danger have been particularly acute for those ryuha in which the headship was restricted to a single family, as it was difficult to guarantee that each generation would produce a son equal to his ancestors in talent and diligence.

History of the Bujinkan Ryuha Mainpage
Paul has spent the last ten years extensively researching the histories of Bujinkan Ryuha through authorities worldwide.
Our style is called Budo Taijutsu, and incorporates many kinds of koryu bugei- warrior traditions that originate before the 16th century.

The Iaido Newsletter: Koryu then and now
Through careful practice of the kata that make up the ryuha’s teachings and traditions, people believe that numerous generations of students and teachers have maintained the tradition exactly as it was in the Edo or even Sengoku period.
Ryuha which were founded during the peace of the Edo era most frequently don’t even bother to include any techniques for armored combat.
A number of ryuha have died in the last 100 years because no one was interested in them.

After all, they reason, the tradition has been faithfully preserved since the founder was inspired, whether by some divinity, a whack on the head, or a sudden realization of how not to get whacked on the head.
It’s easy to imagine that as various teachers were exposed to new techniques and weapons, they would incorporate those they viewed as useful, or at least dangerous if their students were not aware of their use.
Because koryu budo are living entities, they will continue to grow, or fade, with the efforts of the members to adapt their traditions to the ever changing conditions around them.

Referred to as ryuha, these groups, which are more like professional organizations than unions, have long been identified by the old name for their respective regions.
Over the years, the number of these toji ryuha have decreased, as have the number of their members, along with the shrinking sake industry.
Sometimes the toji ryuha is listed on bottles of good sake, as it is indeed a source of pride.

The thicker body of the shinai or bokuto is easier to see, masks minor imperfections in the angle of the blade when it's swung, and rather dramatically changes the feel of any technique that employs the side of the blade.
Different ryuha use different sorts of bokuto for reasons relating to historic preferences, most of which stem from specific aspects of the schools' training and fighting methods.
Arguing the merits of one type of bokuto or another, outside the context of the training practices of the ryuha that uses them, is as pointless and meaningless as arguing whether English is a "better" language than French.

Ryuha are corporate groups controlling a particular asset, in the case of the martial and other arts, mastery of specialized cultural forms.
Ryuha were primarily concerned with the transmission of cultural forms: chanting, dancing, or swordsmanship.
By the Tokugawa period, however, it was customary in all ryuha to write down the teachings of the school and transmit them formally to the successful students, usually in the form of scrolls.

Couple the name changes and splits with the fact that Hisayasu is also claimed as the founder of a few additional ryuha (not to mention the work of his successors) and one has quite a mess to sort through lineage wise.
All ryuha had to take this sort of shift in combative circumstance into account or face extinction because it failed to adapt to changing combative conditions.
This shouldn't be taken as meaning that ryuha didn't influence each other however, ryu were always busy coming up with ways to deal with another rights techniques and something of a technique arms race was always in effect.

Jujutsu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These systems of unarmed combat began to be known as Nihon koryu jūjutsu (Japanese old-style jujutsu), among other related terms, during the Muromachi period (1333-1573), according to densho (transmission scrolls) of the various ryuha (martial traditions) and historical records.
Various traditional ryu and ryuha that are commonly thought of as koryu jujutsu actually diverged from gendai jūjutsu.
Although modern in formation, gendai jujutsu systems have direct historical links to ancient traditions and are correctly referred to as traditional martial systems or ryu.

 A Brief Overview of Ninjutsu
For a samurai, to die while fighting for his lord was one of the greatest honours, since their code Bushido, “the way of the warrior”, required it of them.
Other ryuha were founded by peasants and farmers who were considered less than human by the military government.
Their only chance of survival was to flee to outlying regions and develop skills that would not only help them survive the elements, but the aggression of the samurai as well.

However, the importance of Ryuha became emphasised a result of developments during the later Tokugawa shogunate (from 1600 onwards).
Shortly after the Meiji Restoration in 1868 the Ryuha, along with the samurai who practiced them, were banned, and those that survive to day are mostly remnants that were practiced behind closed doors following the ban and dissolution of the Ryuha.
It is worth noting that most of the head masters of the Ryuha agreed that they were no longer relevant and were therefore willing participants in the break up of their schools.

As there are many koryu bugei ryuha with similar names that are written with different characters, the inclusion of the kanji improved the clarity of the text and were a welcomed addition.

Surrounded by much controversy, today's "ninjutsu" is derived from the traditional fighting arts associated with the Iga/Koga region of Japan.
These arts include both "bujutsu" ryuha (martial technique systems) and "ninjutsu" ryuha, which involve a broad base of training designed to prepare the practitioner for all possible situations.
The history of ninjutsu is clouded by the very nature of the art itself.
