Wakayama Prefecture has quite a few sight-seeing spots: Koyasan, where Kongobuji, the large head temple of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism, is located; three large, famous shrines in Kumano (Kumano Hongu Grand Shrine, Kumano Hayatama Grand Shrine and Kumano Nachi Shrine); and Wakayama Castle, which was the center of the Kishu Clan.
In addition to the historical assets, Doro Gorge along the Kumano River (a national special natural monument), Kinomatsushima Islands, Wakanoura, which was the subject of poems in the ancient collection of poems called Manyoshu, Cape Shionomisaki and lots of spas in Shirahama, Nachi-Katsuura, Ryujin and other places.
