The woods were alive with the sounds of Japanese Bush-Warblers (the Japanese nightingale!) and we also came close to a drumming Copper Pheasant though alas he remained invisible in the dense undergrowth.
After a fair effort we secured stunning views of a cracking male Ryukyu Robin and in another patch of forest we had great views of handsome Lidth's Jays as well as the amazingly dark and distinctive owstoni form of White-backed Woodpecker (surely a potential split!).
A Mandarin Duck, a Brown Hawk Owl, more Ryukyu Scops Owls, the local form of Ryukyu Robin and some attractive Black-naped and Roseate Terns were nice diversions from our task but things were getting worrying.

The Japanese archipelago lies at the eastern edge of Eurasia and includes a diverse range of habitats, from the subtropical Ryukyu Islands to the almost Siberian taiga-like wilds of Hokkaido.
Japan is a surprisingly mountainous and wooded land, with beautifully varied coastlines and heavily populated lowlands, where tiny rice fields dot the landscape amidst the rural dwellings.
And the subtropical Ryukyu Islands in the far south bring an extra dimension to our birding, with seven endemics as the main targets, including the very rare Okinawa Woodpecker, the exceedingly difficult flightless Okinawa Rail, the endangered Amami Thrush, and the restricted-range Amami Woodcock, Ryukyu Scops-Owl, Ryukyu Robin, and Lidth's Jay.
