Black Tom explosion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Black Tom Island is the part of the park at the end of Morris Pesin Drive in the southeastern corner of the park.
Black Tom Island was used as a major munitions depot for materials manufactured in the northeast.
The location of Black Tom Island can still be visited today as it is part of Liberty State Park.

Liberty Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although the island was then abandoned as a military post, it remained under the control of the War Department, with the exception of an acre (4,000 m²) or so at its north end which was set aside for the Lighthouse Board which operated the light in the torch.
Three sites--Governors Island, Ellis Island, and Bedloe's Island--were chosen for defense fortifications, and on February 15, 1800, by act of the New York Legislature, the three islands were ceded to the United States government.
In 1916 the island and the Statue of Liberty suffered extensive damage from the nearby Black Tom Explosion.

 Ellis Island -- History
The island was purchased by the colonist governors of Nieuw Amsterdam (later New York) from Native Americans on July 12, 1630, for "certain cargoes, or parcels of goods." The Dutch called it "Little Oyster Island," because of the delicious oysters found in its sands, and used it as a base for oystering.
Ellis Island was reopened and dedicated on September 10, 1990, as a unit of the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Park Service, administered by the superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island.
Black Tom Wharf, a railroad yard and barge-loading area, was located on the New Jersey shore only a few hundred yards from Ellis Island.

The Black Tom Island Story by James Ottavio Castagnera
Black Tom Island, today comprising a portion of Liberty State Park's south side, was connected to Jersey City by a long pier used by the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company and the National Dock and Storage Corporation as a munitions depot for trans-shipment to the allies on the Western Front.
Damage estimates vary, but windows were shattered within a ten-mile radius; the vast, vaulted concrete ceiling of Ellis Island's main hall collapsed; and "the shock wave set off burglar and fire alarms all over Manhattan," according to my guide.
Fortunately, no immigrants were in the Ellis Island great hall at that early hour; ultimately all those in transit at the time had to be evacuated to Battery Park at the tip of Manhattan.

 Black Tom Explosion
The explosions occurred at Black Tom Island--no longer an island--but a mile-long pier on landfill that connected the island with the Jersey City waterfront (formerly old Communipaw).
In the nearby harbor, the Statue of Liberty sustained $100,000 in damages from the spray of shrapnel, and newly-arrived immigrants at Ellis Island had to be evacuated for processing at the Immigration Bureau at the Battery in New York City.
Black Tom was only one of a number of homeland attacks in retaliation to the British naval blockade of Germany.

Jersey City The Black Tom Explosion at Liberty State Park
On Ellis Island, close by the scene of the blast, the Immigration Station was battered and pocked.
This was Black Tom Pier, resting partly on diminutive Black Tom Island, and containing a complex of warehouses and the tracks of the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
The name "Black Tom" was said to have originated from a swarthy-skinned fisherman, once the island's sole inhabitant.

The Ultimate Black Tom Explosion - American History Information Guide and Reference
Black Tom Island, according to legend, was the home of a dark-skinned fisherman named Tom at one time; however, by 1880, it was already the site of a railroad depot, connected to the mainland by a short bridge.
The Black Tom Explosion occurred on July 30, 1916, killing four people and creating extensive damage to Ellis Island and Jersey City, as well as forcing the closure of the torch of the Statue of Liberty to the public.
German saboteurs allegedly blew up the munitions arsenal on Black Tom Island in the New York Harbor; however, there were few eyewitnesses of the beginning of the explosion.

Ellis Island Passenger Arrivals : American Family Immigration History Center
The main function of Ellis Island changed from that of an immigrant processing station, to a center ofr the assembly, detention, and deportation of aliens who had entered the U.S. illegally or had violated the terms of admittance.
By the terms of an interstate agreement, Ellis Island and neighboring Bedloe's Island (renamed Liberty island in 1956, site of the Statue of Liberty) were declared part of New York State, even though both islands are on the New Jersey side of the main ship channel.
By the time of the American Revolution, the Island was owned by Samuel Ellis, a New York merchant and owner of a small tavern on the island catering to fisherman.

Waits, Tom: Black Rider (Island Records, 1993.11.02)
Wilson gave a hint of being jaded with international success, and of wanting to devote more time to his projects with students in Water Mill, on Long Island.
Shows get put on, as this "Black Rider" was put on, slackly, without people in the audience being able to feel---as if the force were drilling through their heads---the intense pressure of the director's eyes to vivify each gesture, each move, each shift of an item of decor.
The songs and incidental tunes by Tom Waits on The Black Rider were commissioned for a musical drama of that name based on an old German legend, to be staged by director Robert Wilson (who’d previously worked with Philip Glass).

New York Architecture Images-ELLIS ISLAND NATIONAL MONUMENT
Originally a tiny island of 3.5 acres of slush, sand, and oyster shells in the New York Harbor, Ellis Island grew as need dictated to its present size of 27.5 man-made acres housing a complex of 33 buildings.
Ellis Island was forgotten, swallowed by the fierce weather of New York Harbor.
Funds for the restoration of both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are being raised Privately by the Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation, set up in 1982 by Lee Iacocca at the request of President Ronald Reagan.

 Lady Elliot Island 2003
The Island has a resort and is accessible by air from Coolangatta, Brisbane, Hervey Bay or Bundaberg, we chose to drive to Hervey Bay and take a flight and stop for one night only as the price was rather expensive for an extended stay.
Soon we were circling the tiny island in beautiful weather conditions, and as we landed we were surprised to see flocks of birds.
Lady Elliot Island is not very large and it is quite feasible to walk completely around it in an hour or two.

Greenwich Time - U.S. must lead effort to end terrorism
From McCloy's office high in the latest wonder of American architecture, we could see what used to be called Black Tom Island across the Hudson River on the New Jersey side, where German saboteurs had ignited a massive munitions depot laden with cargo destined for England and France.
McCloy was the lead investigator of the explosion that shattered thousands of skyscraper windows on Wall Street and environs on the night of July 30, 1916, convincing thousands of shaken New Yorkers that the Great War in Europe had finally and startlingly come to America.
That explosion, more than a year before America's entry into the war to end all wars, was an act of belligerence against a nation at peace, just as the suicide destruction by hijacked airliners Tuesday morning crumbled the twin towers of the World Trade Center.

The cost of the new checkpoints and of policing the island has totaled almost $20 million, all borne by the federal government.
The spectacular blasts, possibly the work of saboteurs, killed seven people, obliterated the island, caused $15 million in damage, and, across the water, popped about 100 rivets in the statue's arm.
Some 4 million people have visited Liberty Island since it reopened in December 2001, all passing through rigid security checkpoints installed at the departure docks at Battery Park in Manhattan and Liberty State Park in Jersey City.

As we approached Little Barrier Island I was amazed to see a 10-15m whale surface a few metres from the boat, Karen explained that it was a Bryde's Whale which were commonly seen in the area but seldom as inquisitive as this one seemed to be.
This is a world-renowned spot where a group of dedicated enthusiasts have returned the island to it's natural state by planting native plants and removing introduced vermin.
This turned out to be a delightful walk and on the way we saw North Island Robin, Tui, Red-fronted Parakeet (Kakariki) and Saddleback, Unfortunately the weather turned a bit wet but this seemed to bring out the wildlife, as we were informed that the previous day had been windy and birds rather hard to see.

Just as in 9/11's aftermath, a series of commissions were created after World War I to get to the bottom of what had occurred on Black Tom Island.
But never, in all the media coverage, did I hear a commentator mention the Black Tom Island incident of July 1916.
The heroes of Black Tom, for example, were -- surprise -- the Jersey City firemen who battled the inferno.
