S plane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The S plane is a mathematical domain where, instead of viewing processes in the time domain modelled with time-based functions, they are viewed as equations in the frequency domain.
's' transforms are commonly known as Laplace transforms.
In the 's' plane, multiplying by s has the effect of differentiating in the corresponding real time domain.

Complex plane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Argand diagrams are frequently used to plot the positions of poles and zeros of a function in the complex plane.
In control theory, one use of a complex plane is that known as the 's-plane'.
The equation is normally expressed as a polynomial in the parameter 's' of the Laplace transform, hence the name 's' plane.

Zeros of ζ(s) are points in the plane where both Re(ζ(s))=0 and Im(ζ(s))=0; these are points where the red and green curves cross.
If we restrict the s variable to, say, a vertical line in the s plane, the values of w=ζ(s) will also be one dimensional, a curve in the w plane which we can plot.

The time behaviour resulting from a single pole in the s and z planes is shown by the 2 equations above.
In summary, poles within the unit circle in the z plane are stable while poles outside the unit circle produce unstable responses.
