 Samuel I. Hayakawa
Hayakawa was a professor at the college when some 500 students went on strike to force their demands for changes to several of the college’s policies, particularly to those with regard to minority groups and black studies.
The son of Ichiro and Toro Hayakawa, Samuel Ichiye was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1906.
Hayakawa, then 62, strode through the protestors, nimbly scrambled to the roof of the vehicle and yanked the wires from the speakers, all of this action recorded on TV and shown that night to millions of people.

Hayakawa rode the cheers of her mates to a time of 2 hours, 31 minutes and 57 seconds over the windy and hilly 26.2-mile course, earning $18,000 including bonuses in the process.
Hayakawa benefited from the absence of Russians Svetlana Zakharova and Lyubov Morgunova, but even with that she never dreamed of singlehandedly putting an end to the Russians' sweep of the top three spots over the past two years.
Hayakawa stayed on her pace despite trailing by so much and caught Albina Ivanova, who finished second last year after building up a similarly large lead, at the foot of Diamond Head and Alevtina Ivanova shortly thereafter.

Aum Shinrikyo :: High Court Upholds Death Sentence on AUM's Hayakawa
Hayakawa, 54, pleaded guilty in all seven cases in which he was charged, which also included building a plant in Yamanashi Prefecture to mass-produce the nerve gas sarin used in the 1995 fatal attack on the Tokyo subway system.
Hayakawa appealed the death sentence imposed on him July 28, 2000, by the Tokyo District Court.
In handing down his decision on the appeal, Presiding Judge Taketaka Nakagawa dismissed Hayakawa's claim that he was brainwashed by the sect's founder, Shoko Asahara, to commit the crime, saying a death sentence for Hayakawa is ''unavoidable'' given his own responsibility for the crimes.

Hayakawa sought to bring muga, or the "absence of doing," to his performances, in direct contrast to the then-popular studied poses and broad gestures.
In the more than 20 films Hayakawa made with Paramount, he was typecast as the exotic lover or villain forced to relinquish the heroine in the last act--unless the heroine was his wife, Aoki.
Hayakawa made two more films with Ince, The Wrath of the Gods with Aoki as his co-star, and The Sacrifice, before signing with the Jesse L. Lasky Feature Play Company which later became Paramount Pictures.

Hayakawa has run only three marathons, two in Honolulu (she placed fourth in 2002) and one earlier this year in Nagoya, Japan.
Hayakawa's goal for this year's Honolulu Marathon is to break Lyubov Morgunova's course record of 2 hours, 28 minutes, 33 seconds.
One concern is Hayakawa's size and whether she can take the pounding of running over the long haul.

Hayakawa moved here in 1991 after obtaining a degree in French literature at a Tokyo university and spending a few years as a system engineer for a software company until, as he put it, “I couldn’t take it any more.” He now teaches photography at CCAD, and at Ohio Dominican.
Hayakawa feels that “elaborate framing might take something away from the pieces and add something unessential to them.” The photographer also reinforces his chosen medium by leaving the border images visible.
Hayakawa photographs the women's images the conventional way but instead of printing the images on regular photography paper, Hayakawa presents the image on rusted sheet metal.

 Bright Skies - Part 3
Hayakawa was rather touchy when the consultant asked him what these procedures were all about, and he mumbled that it was necessary for the Aum's future experiments "for the benefit of mankind" to choose the correct location.
Hayakawa would still have needed to check for the Exmouth Tx ground-infolded Tesla ray-wave, and ordinary EM hertzian wave, signal strengths-in order to deduce which was the best sheep station area to purchase for eavesdropping on these presumably US-controlled tests.
Hayakawa reportedly began to use the multi-faceted Aum organisation as a convenient cover for a variety of drugs, arms and high-tech scientific equipment (of use in weapons manufacture) dealings around the world.

 Hayakawa: A Summary
Hayakawa (and a number of other linguists) define irony as saying the opposite of what is actually meant; stude, nts should be able to distinguish this meaning from sarcasm, cynicism and some forms of humour (under- and overstatements, «l'ironie du sort») which are sometimes also covered by the term.
Hayakawa's Language in Thought and Action has been one of the course's handbooks for a memorable number of years already, but the manner in which it has been used has changed somewhat over the years.
In what Hayakawa calls intensional orientation, the thought and action of people is conditioned by the (accurate or misleading) image projected by words.
