S3 Savage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seemingly unwilling to invest the time and effort required to setup a structured internal driver development team, Savage technology was sold to VIA for $321m, where it become an integrated motherboard solution initially as part of the Twister chipset, where Savage 2000 2D silicon was merged with Savage 4 3D hardware.
To this extent, had S3 shown the kind of corporate determination AMD has made famous, it is likely they could have remained a major player in the discrete graphics card market.
As a result of being sold to VIA for $321m, Savage hardware became an integrated motherboard solution, initially as part of the Twister chipset, where Savage 2000 2D silicon was merged with Savage 4 3D hardware.

Electronic News: Among Savage Competitors - S3's Savage4 graphics accelerator, ATI Technologies' All-in-Wonder 128 ...
S3 is going to need to start having better quarters and fiscal years than in 1998, however, if it is looking to make that comeback.
One of the advantages S3 has on its side, however, is that it has a "name brand and can get immediately recognized for who they are in the market" which is something that "start-ups and newcomers in the market have a hard time establishing," said Hudson.
Reports indicate S3 and ATI may be only the first of many to introduce next generation graphics products as Nvidia Corp. and Matrox Graphics Inc. are looking to roll out their high performance mainstream accelerators in the coming months.

S3's announcement of the Savage 2000 brought with it waves of applause from onlookers, largely on account of hype that surrounds the promise of hardware-based transform and lighting.
In other words, there was a general sense that S3 was on the up and up, and of course, it doesn't hurt when you originally claim that your next offering will sport 40% more pixel-pumpin' power than it actually does (and everyone is guilty of that).
Now it's April of 2000 and, with S3 sellin' the graphics biz to VIA, it's not clear whether S3's newly found aspirations were acquired alongside their technology intellectual property.

The company we’re discussing today, S3, was one of the larger companies in 3D graphics, although early on many enthusiasts jokingly referred to their Virge line of products as 3D graphics decelerators.

With Savage3D, S3 wasn’t shooting for the high end of the market, instead they were going for the mainstream consumer.
