Draken won due to it being preferred by the air force for operational and economic reasons and the government financially and trade politically.

The Saab 35 Draken [Dragon] is a second generation supersonic interceptor with a distinctive double delta wing.
The decision to develop the Saab 35 Draken supersonic fighter, which introduced what was perhaps the most daring chapter so far in the history of the Swedish aircraft industry, had been taken as far back as 1949.
The J35A Draken entered service in 1959 and was followed by five different versions for the Swedish Air Force, including the all-weather J35F with its then advanced radar, infra-red search and track system, and both radar and IR guided missiles.

In its original configuration, the engine intakes of the SAAB 210 were on the nose of the aircraft, separated by a small nosecose in the shape of a pyramid.
Even in its old age, the Draken was regarded as a prize mount by Flygvapnet pilots, since its performance was still impressive, and the fact that it wasn't as easy to fly as later aircraft such as the Viggen made it more of a challenge.

Other versions of the Draken fighter interceptor was J 35 B (1962), J 35D (1963), J 35F (1965) and finally J 35J - 67 J 35F aircraft upgraded to higher standard (1987).
Due to this bad experiences, for the J 35 Draken, with its still more advanced and uncommon layout, a two-seat trainer was planned from the beginning.
The 26 Draken trainers were re-built fighters of the J 35A variant.
