 The EU & South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (SAARC) - Overview
SAARC groups eight countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
At the 13th SAARC Summit which was held on the 12th-13th November 2005 in Bangladesh, SAARC leaders agreed on the membership of Afghanistan and to discuss later about observer status to give to China and Japan.
The Commission is currently designing a new, broader programme of cooperation with SAARC, which should notably seek to promote the harmonisation of standards; facilitate trade; raise awareness about the benefits of regional cooperation; and promote business networking in the SAARC area.

 Statement by President of Maldives
It is a matter of great satisfaction to all of us that the SAARC Convention on Regional Arrangements for the Promotion of Child Welfare in South Asia and the SAARC Convention on Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Women and Children for Prostitution are to be signed today.
I believe that SAARC as an organisation must be able to support the efforts of its member states in the international arena to obtain a better deal for our peoples.
Indeed, SAARC was to be built not on virgin land, but on terrain that had been scarred by poverty, war, terrorism and mistrust.

SAARC Environment Ministers who met in Colombo from 30 October to 1 November 1998 for their fourth annual Conference under the chairmanship of Nandimithra Ekanayake, MP, Minister of Environment and Forestry of Sri Lanka adopted a common environment programme for the region as a follow up on the SAARC Action Plan on the Environment.
She underscored the fact that SAARC region, which is home for nearly one fifth of the world population, was confronted with worsening poverty, ill health, illiteracy, social instability and continued degradation of the environment.
The SAARC Action Plan on the Environment was examined in detail at the third meeting of the Technical Committee on Environment and Meteorology, which met on Oct 14-16, 1998 at the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu.

If you look at Saarc's history, in the first ten years of Saarc, there was no emphasis on economic cooperation because none of the countries was going ahead with economic reforms.
I've written quite strongly sometimes that Saarc is already dead.

 GEN 32 - SAARC Meeting Pledges to Fight Poverty
(SAARC) ended their two-day meeting on Wednesday with a pledge to increase cooperation in eradicating poverty and illiteracy from the region, reports The Associated Press of Pakistan.
The SAARC secretary-general expressed hope that the goal of free-trade in South Asia would be achieved by the set date of January 2006.
He informed the meeting that the SAARC Secretariat has prepared a concept paper on the establishment of the SAARC Poverty Alleviation Fund (SPAF) that was proposed by India during the 12th Summit at Islamabad earlier this year.

The Heads of State or Government welcomed the signing of the SAARC Convention on Preventing and Combating the Trafficking in Women and Children for Prostitution and expressed their collective resolve to treat trafficking in women and children for the commercial sexual exploitation as a criminal offence of a serious nature.
They also welcomed the signing of the SAARC Convention on Regional Arrangements for the Promotion of Child Welfare in South Asia and observed that the Convention reflected their commitment to place the child first in the national and regional programs of the Member States.
The Heads of State or Government reaffirmed their commitment to SAARC Regional Convention on Suppression of Terrorism, which, among others, recognizes the seriousness of the problem of terrorism as it affects the security, stability, and development of the region.
