SAMPA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Like IPA, SAMPA is usually enclosed in square brackets or slashes, which are not part of the alphabet proper and merely signify that it is phonetic as opposed to regular text.
The result of this problem is that SAMPA cannot be used as an ASCII representation of the general IPA alphabet.
SAMPA was devised as a hack to work around the inability of text encodings to represent IPA symbols.

Charts represent data in different ways depending on the type of data that is presented.
A pie chart is visually appealing and allows for greatest recognition since the number of satisfaction responses can be easily compared to the number of dissatisfaction responses by comparing the size of each sector of the pie graph, which is not easily done if presented, for example, in a histogram (or bar chart).
Charts are not always used for mathematical purposes, but are also used in many widely differing areas.

A chart parser is a type of parser commonly used for natural languages that uses a data-driven approach based on a set of grammatical rules and a dictionary with each of the possible grammatical senses of each word indicated.
In bidirectional chart parsing, edges of the chart are marked with a direction, either forwards or backwards, and rules are enforced on the direction edges must point in to be combined into further edges.
In incremental chart parsing, the chart is constructed incrementally as the text is edited by the user, with each change to the text resulting in the minimal possible corresponding change to the chart.

Like IPA, SAMPA is usually enclosed in square bracketss or slasheses, which are not part of the alphabet proper and merely signify that it is phonetic as opposed to regular text.
However, with the advent of Unicode support for IPA symbols, the necessity for a separate, computer-readable system for representing IPA in ASCII becomes more and more unnecessary as Unicode support becomes more widespread.

SAMPA was originally developed in 1987-89 by an international group of phoneticians, and was applied in the first instance to the European Communities languages Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, and Italian (by 1989); later to Norwegian and Swedish (by 1992); and subsequently to Greek, Portuguese, and Spanish (1993).
SAMPA basically consists of a mapping of symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet onto ASCII codes in the range 33..127, the 7-bit printable ASCII characters.
The SAMPA transcription symbols have been developed by or in consultation with native speakers of every language to which they have been applied, but are standardized internationally.

One thing though is that X-SAMPA, SAMPA, and Kirshenbaum're definitely better than the horrid "ASCIIbet" crap that I see used sometimes around here (which is annoying, because it's not like used anywhere outside of this site, to my knowledge).
Yeah, X-sampa and Sampa are better than the horrid ''ASCIIbet'', because X-sampa contains all the phonemes in every dialect of the whole English speaking world and even foreign phonemes, while ''ASCIIbet'' doesn't even include all of the phonemes in English.
I'm not sure about X-SAMPA, because I don't have a chart for it on hand, but I bet it would be something similar.
