SAMPA, for Speech Assessment Methods Phonetic Alphabet, is a computer-readable phonetic script using 7-bit printable ASCII characters, based on the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
Like IPA, SAMPA is usually enclosed in square bracketss or slasheses, which are not part of the alphabet proper and merely signify that it is phonetic and not regular text.

Like IPA, SAMPA is usually enclosed in square brackets or slashes, which are not part of the alphabet proper and merely signify that it is phonetic as opposed to regular text.
The result of this problem is that SAMPA cannot be used as an ASCII representation of the general IPA alphabet.
SAMPA was devised as a hack to work around the inability of text encodings to represent IPA symbols.

Like IPA, SAMPA is usually enclosed in square bracketss or slasheses, which are not part of the alphabet proper and merely signify that it is phonetic as opposed to regular text.
However, with the advent of Unicode support for IPA symbols, the necessity for a separate, computer-readable system for representing IPA in ASCII becomes more and more unnecessary as Unicode support becomes more widespread.

Talk:Yerba mate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Well, maybe it's not the best source for spanish words, but my Oxford English Dictionary shows it as "maté", and that is how I have always heard it pronounced, but if that is not correct, it should be changed, as long as there is sufficient explanation so no-one just changes it back.
The added accent in English, I imagine, is an attempt to distinguish it from the English one-syllable word "mate".
The word "yerba" I see only on packages of the stuff, though it may be a common part of the name in parts of Mexico and Argentina where the stuff is also popular.

 Bambooweb: Savate
Savate (pronounced s{-"v{t, SAMPA), also known as boxe française (French boxing) or French kickboxing, is a French martial art which uses both the hands and feet as weapons and contains elements of western boxing, grappling and graceful kicking techniques (only foot kick, no knee, no tibia).
A pupil of Casseux's, Charles Lecour was exposed to the English art of boxing around 1830 and felt that he was at a disadvantage, only using his hands to bat his opponent's feet away, rather than punching.
He trained in boxing for two years before, in 1832, combining boxing with chausson and savate to create the sport of savate boxe française as we know it today.

 Term paper on Diphthong
While "pure" vowels, or monophthongs, are said to have one target tongue position, diphthongs have a moving tongue.
Pure vowels are represented in phonetic script by one symbol: English "seem" as [sim], for example.
Diphthongs are represented by two symbols, for example English "same" as [seIm], where the two vowel symbols are intended to represent approximately the beginning and ending tongue positions.
