Power and passion, but also a state of acrimony - News - www.realfooty.com.au
Most SANFL clubs have acknowledged the extenuating circumstances linked with the disappointing figures, and have moved on from the hatred they felt towards Port Adelaide 16 years ago when it betrayed the league.
It is not the happy relationship that many may want to believe, and the early fear that the Magpies would have a huge advantage over their SANFL rivals with vast resources and facilities because of its supposedly close link with the Power could not be further from the truth.
Some SANFL clubs are struggling to survive, but overall South Australian football is in a far healthier state because of having two clubs in the AFL.

 1990 SANFL Grand Final
Port's decision to 'go it alone' in effect forced the SANFL's hand, but the fact that it was the SANFL's application which was ultimately successful did nothing to dull the feelings of bitterness and betrayal felt towards the Magpies by a large proportion of South Australia's football community.
Such feelings inevitably gave the 1990 SANFL grand final, which featured the arch villain of the piece in Port Adelaide, together with one of its most outspoken antagonists in Glenelg, of its something of an extra edge.
The 1990 SANFL grand final was a game which, foreshadowing the Adelaide-Port Adelaide 'showdowns' of seasons to come, effectively divided the sport-loving population of the state: you were either a Port supporter, or you weren't; there was - and is - no middle ground.

 Projects: SANFL Boundary Analysis
The South Australian National Football League (SANFL) approached Professor Graeme Hugo in early 1996 with the problem of re-designing the club boundaries to reflect changes in the age structure of the population.
The SANFL consists of nine clubs that are allocated areas of Metropolitan Adelaide and Country South Australia from which they can recruit and develop junior football talent. The clubs are primarily interested in the junior football talent (aged 0 to 19 years) within each of their allocated zones.
The new boundary proposal was presented and implemented by the SANFL in November 1996.

He played 151 SANFL games for Sturt in two stints from 1948 to 1953 and between 1957 and 1961, kicking 236 goals, and topping the club's goal kicking list on three occasions.
However, over the remainder of his twelve season, 201 game SANFL career, the closest Thompson came to enjoying the thrill of a flag was a preliminary final loss to Glenelg in 1969.
He was voted the club's best and fairest player in 1981 and 1984, and served as captain from 1984 to 1986, but the unarguable highlight of his career was participation in the resounding 82 point grand final defeat of Glenelg in 1987.

Their demands centered on the contract between the AFL and the SANFL, which stated that all AFL matches staged in South Australia must be played at the SANFL-controlled AAMI Stadium until 2016.
While the SANFL has agreed to cancel its contract with the AFL, it has no plans to meet with the SACA to discuss the possibility of the Adelaide Oval hosting AFL matches saying it would financially damage football in South Australia.
