Scandinavian Airlines System is a multi-national airline for Norway, Denmark and Sweden, and the leading carrier in the Nordic countries.
The airline was founded on 1 August 1946 when the flag carriers of Denmark, Sweden and Norway formed a partnership to handle intercontinental traffic to Scandinavia.
The ownership structure of SAS was changed in June 2001, with a holding company being created in which the holdings of the governments changed to: Sweden (21.4%), Norway (14.3%) and Denmark (14.3%) and the remaining 50% publicly held and traded on the stock market.

Scandinavian Airlines pilots in Denmark ended a three-day wildcat strike that stranded 60,000 passengers and dealt a severe financial blow to SAS as it undergoes a major restructuring.
This came after SAS was forced to cancel hundreds of flights out of Copenhagen at the weekend owing to snow and extreme cold, wreaking havoc for tens of thousands of passengers.
Scandinavian Airlines had earlier filed a lawsuit against the SAS pilot unions in Denmark, Norway and Sweden in the Swedish labour court, demanding compensation of 10,000 Swedish kronor (1,300 dollars, 1,080 euros) from each of the pilots.

Cabin crew at SAS Braathens, the Norwegian arm of Scandinavian airline SAS, ended a two-day-old strike and air traffic was expected to return to normal during the weekend, the company has announced.
"SAS is expecting air traffic -- and therefore Easter traffic -- to be normal during the weekend," SAS Braathens said.
SAS, already in financial difficulties, in January had to deal with strike action taken by its pilots in Denmark and Norway, who were protesting the company's restructuring.

July 03, 2003 (Computerworld) Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) announced yesterday that it has signed a contract with a division of The Boeing Co. to offer high-speed Internet access on 11 of its wide-body, long-range aircraft, with service installations scheduled to start early next year.
Stockholm-based SAS, which had a memorandum of understanding with Boeing for its Connexion By Boeing service in November, said passengers would be able to access the service through industry-standard 802.11b wireless LANs installed in the cabin.
Besides SAS, Boeing has an agreement to equip 88 long-range aircraft operated by the Lufthansa Airlines division of Lufthansa AG (see story).
