University of Calif. head opposes SAT requirement
A recommendation by University of California’s president that the widely used SAT college entrance test be dropped as an admission requirement for the system’s nine campuses is likely to prompt college officials nationwide to rethink their policies, education experts say.
He said he has “high regard” for the SAT, but was prompted to make a change because he has grown increasingly troubled by the emphasis on preparing for SAT tests at the expense of more important academic learning.
College Board officials insist the test is an objective measure of whether a student is likely to succeed in the first year of college.

  SAT
The SATs (pronounced "S-A-T" not "sat") are standardized tests, formerly called the Scholastic Aptitude Tests and Scholastic Assessment Tests, frequently used by colleges and universities in the United States to aid in the selection of incoming freshmen.
Entrance to these universities is also almost always based on other factors, such as GPA, teacher recommendations, and participation in extracurricular activities, but some colleges have a threshold score that automatically qualifies a candidate for admission.
To combat this trend, in 1995 the SAT was "recalibrated" (officially, the term is "recentered"), and the average score became again closer to 500.

USATODAY.com - Colleges may rethink use of SATs
WASHINGTON — College officials nationwide are likely to reconsider their use of the SAT college entrance test in light of a recommendation by the University of California's president that the UC's nine campuses drop the test as an admission requirement, education experts said Sunday.
Atkinson said he has "high regard" for the SAT but was prompted to propose a change because he has grown increasingly troubled by the emphasis on preparing for SAT tests at the expense of more important academic learning.
But the SAT increasingly is playing a pivotal role in the affirmative action debate raging across college campuses nationwide because fl and Hispanic test-takers on average score lower than white and Asian students.
