SATA was introduced in 2002 at significantly higher speed, transferring data in each direction at 1.5 Gbps.
SATA cables and connectors are considerably smaller than their PATA counterpart and take up a lot less space in the case.
SATA defines only internal drives, but eSATA (External SATA) enables them to reside in their own housing outside the computer and be plugged in as required.

Review: HighPoint Technologies RocketMate 1100 and Rocket 1511
SATA can only have one drive hooked up to each motherboard or controller card connector, but the cables are easy to deal with and can be up to a metre long.
SATA was just breaking into the PC marketplace a year ago, when I wrote this; nowadays, many motherboards have at least a couple of SATA ports along with their PATA connectors, and SATA drives are easy to find in the retail stores and not a lot more expensive than their PATA cousins.
Sure, SATA's one-device-per-wire design means each drive gets as big a share of the available bandwidth as it possibly can, but it's nice to be able to connect more than one device to a cable, if only to avoid a spray of separate wires coming out of the back of your computer.

SATA also claims it will be faster but the history of serial interfaces indicates you must be careful when reading such speed claims.
On a SATA interface the equivalent to this reset does not seem to reset anything and at some times it is basically ignored by the SATA controller and device.

The advantages of SATA II over SATA I
SATA I drives and controllers are currently available in many new desktop machines, but the current buzz for SATA revolves around improvements to the SATA specification that make SATA more useful in enterprise environments.
SATA II is better suited for enterprise environments because of three important features, port multipliers, port selectors and native command queuing.
In this way, data on SATA drives stays more accessible than it would if it was on tape, but valuable space in the main data center is reserved for the data that really needs to be there.

Speedy simplicity: serial-storage interfaces - 1/22/2004 - EDN   (Site not responding. Last check: )
SATA migrates from a multiperipheral chain to a series of point-to-point links between the controller and each peripheral.
Pragmatically, SATA's lack of support for the SCSI command set is also a significant roadblock to adoption wherever continued use of legacy software is desirable.
And, because SATA is a storage-tuned interface, its proponents claim that you'll obtain more efficient use of its peak transfer capability in typical usage environments than you will with the higher overhead, more general-purpose USB and FireWire alternatives.

SATA has several practical advantages over the parallel signaling (also called Parallel ATA or PATA) that has been used in hard drives since the 1980s.
SATA cables are more flexible, thinner, and less massive than the ribbon cables required for conventional PATA hard drives.
SATA cables can be considerably longer than PATA ribbon cables, allowing the designer more latitude in the physical layout of a system.

Many believe that if SATA I drives have transfer rates of 1.5Gbps, then 3.0Gbps rates must be held by drives which have SATA II in their names.
Also recall that even though a SATA device might claim 3Gbps transfer rates, 20% of the bandwidth is dedicated for parity in the encoding scheme of the bus - which is why we claim effective thoroughput of 300MBps as opposed to 375MBps.

For Marvell chipsets 88SX5040, 88SX5041, 88SX5080, and 88SX5081 "Hercules I" (all SATA-I); and 88SX6041 4-port and 88SX6081 8-port "Hercules II" (both SATA-II), there is a "mvSata" driver from Marvell International Ltd. Like Garzik's libata driver, Marvell's "mvSata" driver uses the kernel's SCSI layers.
SATA can theoretically do tagged command queuing (TCQ), but support for that feature is just now (2004-07) under construction in libata — and exists in none of the other Linux driver sets.

Perhaps the primary financial benefit of the SATA Consortium lies in the assembly and maintenance of a SATA device interoperability test bed, which is a continually updated collection of representative products from all participating members.
The mutually beneficial aspects of having a continuously available reference interoperability test bed which companies can use to verify proper operation of their new SATA products is the single most beneficial aspect of the Consortium.
Also, the physical and phy layer conformance test services, which are included as part of a full consortium membership, provide an additional cost-savings to vendors who do not wish to spend internal resources to develop this testing on their own.
