Telecommunications giant SBC Communications Inc., which has eliminated 35,000 jobs in the past four years, will cut more management positions to keep staffing in line with its dwindling local-phone service business and recent productivity gains, a company official said.
San Antonio-based SBC recently asked executives to conduct an inventory of management positions in their departments and decide how many can be eliminated, according to spokesman Walt Sharp.

San Antonio-based SBC said its proposals to the union were more generous than those in the contract the union reached last year with Verizon Communications Inc. and SBC was disappointed it had not reached an agreement yet with the CWA.
SBC has sought ways to cap health care costs it says have risen more than 10 percent a year since 1999, proposing some increases in co-payments and other fees.

NEW YORK — SBC Communications said yesterday it expects to eliminate about 13,000 jobs after its $16 billion acquisition of ATandT closes, but the telephone company stressed that many positions can be cut through attrition rather than layoffs.
SBC said the divisions that would have excess staffing after the merger included about 5,100 from management of the long-distance and local networks.
SBC declined to say in which states the 12,800 cuts might come.

BY AMY F. LANSING -- SBC Communications Inc. could lay off as many as 1,000 Michigan workers over the next few years as the telecommunications giant consolidates its regional customer service operations, a spokesman said Thursday.
The Michigan layoffs are among those going on in the 13 states where SBC provides telephone service, but the number of Michigan workers laid off will dwarf others in the Midwest, Resch said.
SBC workers in Michigan who are laid off will be given priority for other positions in the company, Resch said.
