 SCADTA Joins the Fight
SCADTA (Sociedad Colombo-Allemán De Transporto Aéreo -- Colombian-German Air Transport Corporation) was the first commercial airline in the western hemisphere.* It began operations in Colombia on October 19, 1920.
The government required regular Colombian postage be affixed alongside the SCADTA stamps for their income from the contract.
Interestingly, it was SCADTA's aggressive expansion throughout South and Central America during the 1920s that led to an appropriation by the U. Congress to provide funds for the Post office to subsidize domestic and foreign air transport expansion in 1925.

Scadta agents and the Colombian consulates in the foreign countries calculated the rates involved and sold Scadta postage stamps.
The Scadta stamps were placed to the right of the normal postage stamps from the originating country.
To avoid speculation and exchange of stamps between countries, due to currency rate fluctuation, the stamps were handstamped or, beginning in 1923, machine overprinted with a Spanish abbreviation of the local country name.

 Medellín, that afternoon in June
It was not an occasional dispute because there were national interests at play, involving "concepts of patriotism, of sovereignty, of emancipation and, to say it in terms used now, of liberation".
SCADTA was a German air commercial enterprise –the first based in the American continent and the second in the world- and it was a tool of the spreading plans of nazism.
These types of frictions created a very special situation that made that on June 24, 1935 the national self pride of Samper pushed him to scare back his German colleague heading the aircraft towards the latter's plane, at a risky move that was perfect.

Two years earlier, an Army Air Corps officer, Major Henry H. ("Hap") Arnold - as General Arnold he would command all American air forces during World War II - had been an intelligence officer stationed in Washington.
For some time he had been reading intelligence reports about an airline recently established in Columbia known as SCADTA.
Its capital, its pilots, its managing director, who was Peter Paul Von Bauer, had all come from Germany shortly after World War I. According to Major Arnold's intelligence reports, Von Bauer intended to extend his airline up as far as the Panama Canal and - hopefully - into the United States.
