Sega Amusement Machine Research and Development Department 2 (popularly known as Sega-AM2 or simply AM2) was a research and development team for the video game company Sega.
Of Sega's AM teams, AM2 was the best known and would become a major development house for Sega, first creating the late-eighties classics After Burner II, Out Run, and Space Harrier, all of which were monster successes.
Following the release of OutRun 2, AM2 was absorbed into Sega (July 1, 2004).

With 3 landmark AM2 titles (After Burner II, Space Harrier and OutRun) on one disc and in close-to-perfect arcade form, this is a must-own package for gamers and collectors alike.
Another impressive aspect of the game as it appears on Sega Ages is the flawless nature of the translation, which allows for all the animations and details in the stages to appear in an uncompromised form which makes the translations released on the SMS seem anemic and weak in comparison.
Space Harrier is another example of Sega AM2’s early brilliance, one of the earliest examples of the creativity and fun that Sega has become known for.

The Next Level - Feature: Propeller Arena Retrospective
Propeller Arena is known to many Sega fans as "the one that got away." Nearly completed by Sega AM2 for a Fall 2001 Dreamcast release, it was cancelled at the last moment in the wake of the September 11th tragedy.
But Sega's embattled final system was already on its way out at the time, and the game ended up being shelved for good.
Sega's fears that some players might re-inact the 9/11 tragedy online by deliberately crashing their planes into those buildings or staging hi-jackings at the airport may have had some merit.

The Saturn version of Virtua Fighter 2 was a testament to the prowess that Sega's AM2 department had when it came to getting the most out of the somewhat feeble (for 3D anyway) system.
While the graphics weren't up to snuff with the arcade version, and the gameplay was slightly different (some combos were easier), there's no doubt that the home port was an amazing achievement at a time when arcade to console ports were often poor in quality.
Rumours have run rampant that AM2 was using an emulator for their port due to the loss of the raw data of the game.
