The SEGA NAOMI (N ew A rcade O peration M achine I dea) is a development of the Sega Dreamcast technology as a basis for an arcade system.
The first Naomi hardware was demonstrated 1998 at JAMMA as the successor to the Model hardware.
The first Naomi board was succeeded technologically the Naomi 2 debuted at JAMMA in It was basically similar to the Naomi and had full backwards compatibility.

Naomi and Dreamcast are almost identical in that they both share the same CPU (Hitachi SH-4 200 MHz), same GPU (PowerVR Series2 100 MHz), and the same 64 channel ARM7 based sound system (Yamaha AICA 45 MHz).
SEGA first showed the Naomi board at JAMMA (Japan Amusement Machinery Manufacturers Association), which took place from September 17th to the 20th, 1998 in Japan.
SEGA is going to have standard cabinets (Naomi Universal Cabinet or NUC for short) for Naomi, with single and dual driving cabinets, and the regular standup arcade cabinets.

Sega also produced a light gun for the system, although this was not sold in the US presumably because Sega did not want its name on a gun in the light of recent school shootings.
Sega also developed the Dreameye (a digital camera for the Dreamcast) as well as a Zip drive for the console, but the Dreameye was only released in Japan and the Zip drive was never released to the public.

Sega of Japan was purchased for $38 million by a group of investors led by Rosen and Hayao Nakayama, a Japanese businesman who owned a distribution company that had been acquired by Rosen in 1979.
Unfortunately Sega has fallen on hard times recently and is moving out of hardware manufacturing, at least in the home console market; the arcade SEGA Naomi units are still being produced.
Sega was attempting to "lock out" game companies from making Genesis games unless they paid Sega a fee (ostensibly to maintain a consistent level of quality of games for their system.) Their strategy was to make the hardware reject any catridge that did not include a sega trademark.

SEGA first showed Naomi 2 at the Japan Amusement Machinery Manufacturers Association (JAMMA) Fall 2000 arcade show in Tokyo, Japan which took place from September 21st to the 23rd.
Naomi 2 has a dedicated geometry coprocessor to handle transformations and lighting which is rated at 10 million polygons per second with 6 light sources.

NAOMI games with one motherboard provide near-flawless conversion(House of the Dead 2), but games with multiple motherboards(Ferrari F355) or games on the Model 3 board(Sega Rally 2), may provide difficult to do conversions for.
Get a developers' kit from Sega, so you have the exact programs and tools that Sega uses themselves to make games for the NAOMI(This step can be sidestepped, but making a game compatible with the NAOMI later can be quite a hassle).

Sega have announced that the Dreamcast VMS will plug into Sega's Naomi arcade unit.
One interesting thing to note about the Naomi arcade board is that you will be able to plug in the VMS unit to save high scores and copy data to and from the Dreamcast.

Sega decided on a PowerVR2 DC 3d chip made by NEC It is a pretty nice 3d chip and is capable of cranking out some great lighting, textures and animation.
Sega used a unique disk format called GD-ROM that could store a Gig of data and were supposedly impossible to pirate but were eventually hacked and could be duplicated using normal CD-Rs.
Sega did make a Broadband Ethernet Adapter for the Dreamcast but it did not come out until the very end of the Dreamcast life and is still very rare.

Naomi is basically a beefed-up version of the Dreamcast game-console platform, which will make its debut in Japan in November.

I commented on many of Sega's releases in the last MGT Report, but the company showed a number of titles at AOU that didn't make an appearance at the ATEI show.
It's the first playable title from Sega to utilize multiple Naomi boards, and I believe that it's going to be the new standard for Sega's high-end arcade machines for the foreseeable future.
SNK announced that it would develop some titles on Naomi in the future, which presumably means a phasing out for the company's not- super-hot Hyper Neo Geo 64 3D technology eventually.
