SETI@home - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SETI@home ("SETI at home") is a distributed computing project using Internet-connected computers, hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory, at the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States.
Seth Shostak (2004), a prominent SETI figure, has stated that he expects to get a conclusive signal and proof of alien contact between 2020 and 2025, based on the Drake equation.
Other users collected large quantities of equipment together at home to create "SETI farms", which typically consist of a number of computers consisting of only a motherboard, CPU, RAM and power supply that are arranged on shelves as diskless workstations running either Linux or Windows 98 SE "headless" (without a video card).

SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is a scientific effort aiming to determine if there is intelligent life out in the universe.
But one by one, the prospective SETI hits have been downgraded to misses and tagged as radio interference.
SETI@home is separate from the SETI Institute, which is engaged in several scientific and educational projects designed to search for extraterrestrial intelligence in the Universe.

Using these telescopes (which are essentially extremely large satellite dish antennas), scientists involved in SETI hope to detect radio signals "leaking" from other intelligent civilizations or that other civilizations have specifically beamed at us.
The SETI approach narrows it down a bit, but it is still listening to a huge number of frequencies.
According to the SETI@home site, the average home computer takes about 30 hours to process one "work unit," and the 35 gigabytes of daily data is broken into 140,000 work units.

It appears from the table that effective amateur SETI explorations can be conducted out beyond approximately 30 light years provided the processing bandwidth is near the minimum (approximately 0.1 Hz), the system temperature is minimal (20 to 50 Degrees Kelvin), and the EIRP of the source (transmitter) is greater than approximately 25 terawatts.
Should discussion about the SETI@home project and the SETI project in general begin to crowd eachother, a second newsgroup devoted solely to SETI@home will be created with the name "alt.sci.seti.at-home" leaving "alt.sci.seti" for discussion of the SETI project.

SETI at Home Director David Anderson said the perpetrators didn't actually hack into SETI servers, but instead tricked them into sending back e-mail addresses for roughly 50,000 out of SETI's 3 million users.
In any event, the incident is not likely to raise the hackles of many SETI At Home fans, most of whom are young, male science fiction buffs who are quite accustomed to the minor threats and annoyances that come with a lifetime spent online, Anderson said.
SETI at Home is in the final stages of launching SETI at Home II, which will use data exclusively from an array of radio telescopes in Australia.

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program, derided in some scientific circles as a waste of time, received a good measure of publicity with the success of Cal Berkeley's groundbreaking SETI@Home project.
The software downloads a batch of data from SETI, then when the computer is not being used, the program kicks in like a screensaver program would and starts analyzing the information.
The idea for an all-SETI telescope is not new, but earlier efforts always failed due to the high costs.

SETI Begins At Home (PC Today, 2004)
SETI, or Search For Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence, is a group devoted to using its PCs to listen for radio signals from space, which may indicate the presence of life outside of Earth.
The heart of the SETI@home project is a screen saver, a program that uses a PC's otherwise-idle processor time to examine data collected by a powerful radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico (www.naic.edu).
With a booming number of powerful personal computers able to access the Internet, most of which were sitting idle 99% of the time, Gedye "identified SETI as a scientific problem that is interesting to a lot of people and also has a use for computer time," Anderson said.

Now even with a good deal of processing power available the SETI project could only process a small amount of the total available data in any real depth and of course a wider search may well lose a very faint signal hidden amongst background noise.
So the SETI at home project was created to use the distributed power of home computers and make the most of unused CPU cycles when PC's are left on but dormant and what better way to do this than to use a screensaver.
Tapes of 35gb of recorded data from the telescope are split into much smaller work units at UC Berkeley and then distributed to SETI at home screensaver users.

SETI@home is probably the largest computer project in the world as it utilises the home computers (plus many school and business computers) of over 2.5 million users (2,682,000 at 13 January 2001) in hundreds of countries (226 countries at 03 May 2003).
Anyone with a home computer and access to the Internet can become part of the phenomenen.
