SETI - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SETI has occasionally been the target of criticism by those who suggest that it is a form of pseudoscience.
A basic assumption of SETI is that of "Mediocrity" [1]: the idea that humanity is not exotic in the Cosmos but in a sense "typical" or "medium" when compared with other intelligent species.
SETI advocates did not give up, and in 1995 the nonprofit "SETI Institute" of Mountain View, California, resurrected the work under the name of Project "Phoenix", backed by private sources of funding.

SETI@home - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SETI@home ("SETI at home") is a grid computing (distributed computing in the project's own terminology) project using Internet-connected computers, hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory, at the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States.
SETI@home is often used to check on the reliability of a computer configuration when overclocking.
SETI@home, in addition to its altruistic use to aid SETI, is quite useful as a stress testing tool for computer workstations.

 SETI
The roots of SETI in its modern form, as a search for artificial signals over interstellar and even intergalactic distances, can be traced back to the 1930s with the discovery by Karl Jansky of radio waves coming from a source outside the Solar System.
In the Soviet Union, SETI was seen as a natural outcome of communist philosophy and, partly for this reason, became quickly established as a respectable field of research.
The first practical proposals in SETI were made in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but were aimed only at interplanetary communication (see communication, with the Moon and planets).

Rather than dismiss his concerns, Dr Carrigan wants the Seti scientists to build safety features into their network to act as a quarantine so any potentially damaging signals can be trapped before they infect the internet.
