  Punk rock
Punk rock (from 'punk', meaning rotten, worthless) was originally used to describe the primitive guitar based rock and roll of '60s bands such as The Seeds[?], and later Detroit bands The Stooges and MC5.
"Punk rock" now largely tends to mean the anti-establishment musical movement of the period 1976-80, exemplified by the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones and their descendants.
The roots of punk rock lie in the earlier form of "punk", as well as the UK pub rock scene, glam rock groups such as The New York Dolls and the early driving forces of the avant garde new wave music, such as Patti Smith.

Rolling Stone : The Sex Pistols: Biography
Unabashedly crude, intensely emotional, calculated either to exhilarate or to offend, the Sex Pistols' music and stance were in direct opposition to the star trappings and complacency that, by the mid-'70s, had rendered rock & roll irrelevant to the common bloke.
While the Sex Pistols were not the first punk rockers (that distinction probably goes to the Stooges), they were the most widely known and at least, to appearances, the most threatening.
The owner of a London clothes boutique, Sex, which specialized in "anti-fashion," McLaren had conceived the idea of a rock & roll act that would challenge every established notion of propriety when, in 1975, he found himself managing the New York Dolls in their final months as a group.

At the forefront of Punk were the Sex Pistols without whom it is questionable whether the genre would have received the mass exposure it did.
Further Sex Pistol releases were held back due to their ongoing and much publicized record company battles which led to them being dropped by EMI and then AandM before Richard Branson's Virgin label signed them in the late spring of '77.
Meanwhile the Sex Pistols were becoming even more notorious releasing a song called God Save the Queen around the time of the Queen's silver jubilee and on Jubilee day, a national holiday, they were arrested while playing on a boat on the River Thames.

In fact, the Sex Pistols's entire career was a study in being dropped from label after label, until Lydon ended the band in January 1978 by telling a concert crowd "Ever get the feeling you're being cheated?" and walking off the stage.
It did showcase their sense of humor and ennui, with the continued line of "We're so pretty, oh so pretty, pretty vacant," and the music behind it was monstrous, but this didn't cause nearly the stir that the previous two did.

It doesn't wave sex in the audience's face, saying "look how shocking this is," it just says what it has to say and leaves the audience to laugh, or squirm, or whatever.
