Major Survey of Anselm Kiefer's Works at SFMOMA | Art Knowledge News
SFMOMA’s presentation will include extraordinary works by Kiefer from the Museum’s own collection, such as the monumental paintings Isis and Osiris (1985–87) and The Sixth Trumpet (1996), as well as other critically important pieces from a renowned private collection in San Francisco that did not travel to previous tour venues.
Drawing on the physical characteristics of his media to underscore intellectual concerns, Kiefer embraces a complex array of subjects—medieval alchemy, occult philosophy, astronomy, pagan ritual, religious mysticism—in order to address the dialogue between history and spirituality.
The title is drawn from the chapter in the Book of Revelations entitled “The Trumpets,” signifying the instruments carried by the seven angles to herald the end of the world.

SFMOMA to cut back on exhibits / Endowments frozen after losses on market
SFMOMA, which has built an international reputation in the past decade, will gradually reduce its exhibits from about 25 per year to perhaps 18 to bring its spending in line with the shrinking economy and the realities of the museum business, Director Neal Benezra told The Chronicle.
While its managers say SFMOMA has cash to keep its operations running and has thus far made only modest cuts, the museum's most recent financial report shows it ending the 2002 fiscal year with nearly a $10 million cumulative operating deficit -- part of which is due to losses in its endowment fund.
Walker said SFMOMA is planning to hold on to its investments and hope the market revives.

But SFMOMA's reaction to the Chagall crowds was so idiotic that almost nobody ended up seeing anything else: the 5th floor, home to the Chagalls, was packed, while the rest of the museum was a ghost town.
But here's where SFMOMA's unique brand of genius comes in to play: at the end of the Chagall show, when demand for tickets was higher than it had ever been, the museum simply stopped selling them through TicketWeb.
SFMOMA sits in the heart of Silicon Valley, where sporting stadiums are named things like Network Associates Stadium and 3Com Park.

Opening at the SFMOMA on November 19th and running until February 28th, the exhibit has more than 80 self-portraits in many different media.

As SFMOMA confronts the reality of works produced in digital media, it must meet yet another challenge to the integrity and logic of its method of presenting art.
Throughout the past century, the museum's traditional role as the framer of unique and valuable objects has been challenged by artists who embrace technologies of mass reproduction, appropriate everyday objects, or create ephemeral work.
If we accept the idea that a museum is an institution that enhances and, some might even say, creates art by framing objects and images, then we must respond to the installation, performance, and digital artists who demand new ways of framing their work.
