Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Economy of SFRY is known for the organization of that country, and its particular brand of workers' self-management system.
Like the Kingdom of Yugoslavia that preceded it, the SFRY bordered Italy and Austria to the northwest, Hungary and Romania to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece and Albania to the south, and the Adriatic Sea to the west.
SFRY recognised "nations" (narodi) and "nationalities" (narodnosti) separately; the former being reserved for the main and indigenous peoples, and the latter for the minorities and immigrants.

SFRY consisted of six republics with ethnicities living here and there in peace until it was a major factor for the dissolution of the federation.

With respect to assets and liabilities of the former SFRY, the United States’ position is that each of the Successor Defendants constitutes a successor with interests in property of the former SFRY.
The district court correctly determined that issues regarding the assets and liabilities of the successors to the former SFRY must be resolved on political grounds by the political branches of government.
Because allocation of liabilities of the former SFRY raises political questions that have not been settled, it would be inappropriate for any judgment to be entered directly against the Successor Defendants, either jointly or individually.

 MILOSEVIC
Under the constitution of the SFRY, the JNA was under the command of the federal presidency, but Ante Markovic violated the constitution and ordered the JNA to take action in Slovenia.
What happened according to Jovic was that Markovic raided the foreign exchange reserves of the SFRY, and the citizens who had converted their money into deutschemarks were unable to get their money back out of the banks, and had to be issued what amounted to IOU’s by the state.
Even though Markovic almost single handedly destroyed the economy of the SFRY, and caused countless citizens to lose their life savings, he had the nerve to accuse Milosevic of “stealing” state funds.

While Milosevic was in power, Belgrade insisted that the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (the FRY, consisting of Serbia and Montenegro) was the sole legitimate successor to the SFRY and, as such, was the rightful heir to most of the property left behind by the defunct state that had once included six republics.
When the SFRY broke up, each republic grabbed the property that happened to be located on its own territory.
In practice, the successor-states would keep what they grabbed on their territories in the early 1990s; assets that were destroyed or spent over the years would be written off; and the share-out would include the remaining easily-identifiable foreign assets, worth perhaps no more than $2.5 billion.
