Ex Libris - SFX - Overview
SFX is also a key component in the management of electronic resources in a library.
SFX provides the robustness, flexibility, and independence that libraries need for defining links to help their patrons navigate to the resources and services relevant to their search results- services that include, for example, the desktop delivery of journal articles or e-books.
SFX linking uses the OpenURL standard for interoperability between information resources and service components, which allows for localization in an open linking environment.

Now when a student finds a journal article in a database, she can click on the SFX button to bring up links to all the places the article is available in the library's collections.
Not only will SFX show the holdings of the paper copy of the journal in the library catalog, but it might also find several electronic databases with full-text versions of the article and a site on the open Internet with a copy of the article.
SFX allows the library to direct the user to the most appropriate copy of the resource, in particular letting the user know about resources they might not have otherwise considered.

Since SFX intends to serve a bundle of links to the user for each link-source, a "just-in-case" approach, instantly feeding all links for each link-source, would inevitably lead to user interface problems.

SFX linking is crucially dependent on each publisher's electronic journal access mechanism, which currently means that with some electronic journals you can go directly to the article or the issue contents page, and with others just to the journal web page.
