The 26th edition of Sferakon was held April 23 to 25 in its traditional venue, the building of the Electronics and Computing Faculty at Zagreb University.
Some of the highlights of the convention’s rich program were the lectures on Frank Herbert’s Dune universe, alternative history in SF, crypto zoology and the continuation of the round-table discussion about the state of Croatian SF literature which began at this year’s Istrakon.
Sferakon’s main event was the presentation of this year’s SFera literary awards, which began in 1981.

 SFERAKON '99: News
The organizational comitee of SFERAKON 2000 -- tha last in the 20th century -- is headed by "mailto:maleus@usa.net">Klaudije Radanovic, to whom you can direct any ideas and suggestions.
SFERAKON '99 has obviously chosen its GoHs well, which is proven by the piece of news, published in the Locus magazione: Robert Silverberg has -- together, with another great bard of science-fiction, Ray Bradbury -- become a member of the prestigious The Science Fiction & Fantasy Hall of Fame.
After a short inroductory period, today the SFERAKON's web sithe has got a new look, designed by Karlo Galeta, a young Croatian designer and illustrator, a winner of the "SFera" award in 1997.

 SFERAKON '99: Program
The reknown names SFERAKON hosted in previous years (such as Brian Aldiss, Bob Shaw, Sam Lundwall, Joe Haldeman, G. Kay...) have set certain standards that were impossible to ignore this year.
At SFERAKON '99 we will present an original concept, dubbed Ghost of Honor, through which would each year another late SF author be presented to the public, especially the younger.
The central event of every SFERAKON is the annual formal assembly of the SFera members, at which the club gives its annual "SFera" award to the best Croatian authors in SF, fantasy and similar genres in the previous year.

SferaKon in Zagreb is the oldest convention in Croatia, running every year from 1977.
SferaKon attracts almost 1000 visitors (other conventions are smaller), offering the usual convention programme, lectures, movies, costumes and gaming, as well as being an opportunity for fans and professionals to meet and exchange ideas.
In the recent years SferaKon invited quite an enviable number of foreign GOHs, including Martin Easterbrook, Gay Gavriel Kay, Robert Silverberg and Karen Haber, Walter Jon Williams, Lois McMaster Bujold, George R. Martin and this year's Ken MacLeod.

Darko is responsible for the short story collections that are being given away to SFerakon attendees.
It will be the 20th Sferakon and everybody will be trying a bit harder, but girls are taking over.
I've missed the happy scene (yes, again), as I was trying to dance on the bar, but nobody joined me[24] and I am not much of a dancer anyway, so I stopped making fool of myself and went to talk with one from the Trio Fantastica.

He finds the old world of Yugoslav science fiction intriguing, from the pulp cover translations of Western SF novels to state-sponsored SFF societies.
I was a guest of Sferakon, who covered our first four nights in the hotel; my flight was paid for by the British Council, for whom I gave a talk as part of a science festival at Zagreb's Technical Museum.
The Pentagon's science fiction weapons program (railgun warships, anyone?), space tugs, a robot built out of DNA, NASA's wilder dreams, the fantasy folk seen in Scotland, and why we should be begging China for a decent space race.

Croatia This year's Sferakon has also been designated a Euroconference (an international get-together).
The con is being held from the 24t to the 26th of April.
The convention is being held at the Faculty of Electrotechnic and Computing in Zagreb, which has a good conference center and enough space to host up to 1000 people (Sferakon usually has up to 600-700 people comming and going) Contact: Maja Cetineo --dipl.ing.

Their annual convention - SFeraKon - is best, biggest and most visited in Croatia (and so it was in former Yugoslavia).
SFera strongly contributed in starting of publishing first Croatian (and former Yugoslavian, by the way) professional SF magazine called Sirius, which earned several European sci-fi awards in middle-80’s, but ceased with issue #166 in year 1989.

Shield Maidens of Midgard - happenings - sferakon
First public appearance made by our society took part from april 22nd til april 24th 2005 on the convention of fantasy and science fiction - SFerakon - which has been held in Zagreb for years.
Shield Maidens of Midgard are pleasantly surprised with this event because we have found some interesting persons, unusual stories, people who playfully turn to imaginary worlds instead of losing their spirits in everyday life.

Lastly, a con, SFerakon, is in preparation in Zagreb.
In the last few years everything died because of the war, but "SFerakon strikes back" as it says on the publicity!
We are preparing for a two or three stream convention with more than 5000 attendees with film shows, readings, talks etc. The SFera prize has also been restablished after a few years gap.

Anyway, this is a thread about SF in very small countries, what Croatia certainly is. But I must tell you about Croatian region - peninsula Istra (about 200.000 inhabitants) that is an SF anomaly in the world.

SFera, the oldest of the SF clubs in Croatia -- and almost every large city has at least one -- has just celebrated its 20th birthday and has for 18 years held the annual Croatian SF Convention SFERAKON, visited by some 600 fans and programme participants every year.
Zagreb was host to the World SF General Meeting in 1983.

 Star Trek The Neutral Zone 2
The entire source code will be well documented so new programmers can easily pick up where I've left.
I just learned that "Star Trek: The Neutral Zone" (The first sequel) was played on a star trek conference in Croatia (SFERAKON).
A few trekkies vs. a few star wars fans, I don't know who won though :)
