Until this summer he was running Irix 6.5.16 on an SGI Octane single processor machine.
Well, this user just got a new SGI Octane2 dual processor box that came factory installed with Irix 6.5.21.
I realize that this sounds pretty absurd and unnecessary, and that's because it is. The Octane2 is a $30,000+ machine designed to generate scientific calculations and superb graphics rendering, not cater to a user's email needs.

In the office, I have an SGI O2 on my desk - depending on what I'm doing, I either use it as a more robust Xterm, a compilation box, or instead use its monitor as a 1600x1200 dual display for Bogie.
Bogie comes into my lab also, where he lives alongside an SGI Octane2 (for stimulus presentation), a slowish linux box for spike train analysis, and an ancient DOS box which controls various things during experiments.
The DOS box runs some lab control and stimulus delivery code which has no right to exist called 'Exp', but I have interfaced it to an OpenGL program running on the Octane2, so that it drives the Octane2 as a slave for presenting visual stimuli.
