The inaugural meeting of the SGPC was held at the Akal Takht on 12 December 1920.
The SGPC in this struggle maintained a policy of nonviolence and peaceful, passive resistance whereas the government tried all means of suppression arrests, merciless beating, detention, summary trials, imprisonment and even firing on a peaceful unarmed band of volunteers at Jaito.on 21 February 1924.
Both the SGPC and the Akali Dal were declared unlawful bodies on 12 October 1923 and all their top leaders and hundreds of activists were put behind the bars.

The SGPC members from Haryana, including Mr J.S. Jhinda and Mr Didar Singh Nalvi, while justifying the demand for a separate committee said that as per the Re-organisation Act of November 1966, there was a provision to constitute a separate committee for the Sikh shrines in Haryana.
SGPC member Harinderpal Singh told reporters that the convention, which would be attended by SAD chief Parkash Singh Badal and SGPC president Bibi Jagir Kaur, would appraise the Congress-led UPA government about the implications of the formation of the separate committee.
SGPC members from Haryana earlier this week stated that the Haryana chief minister had assured them that a Bill regarding the constitution of a separate gurdwara parbandhak committee for Haryana would be brought in the forthcoming session of the Assembly and a separate SGPC would be constituted.

Kharak Singh, one of five members of the SGPC's Women's Seva Committee, said in an interview that the committee had received input from Sikh organizations and individuals who are both for and against allowing Amritdhari women to perform seva at the Darbar Sahib.
When asked about members of the SGPC and the Darbar Sahib Management manipulating and pressuring persons into giving an opinion against allowing seva, Kharak Singh remarked that because he did not have a first-hand experience of this, he could not make a comment on it.
Although the SGPC approved it five years ago, it took that long for it to be implemented.

However, two years ago, Ranjit Singh Nanda, a former inspector in Punjab police who was on deputation to the CBI during Operation Bluestar, told SGPC the artefacts and manuscripts were ferried to a youth hostel after the army action, catalogued and sent to an unknown location by CBI.
Responding to a letter from SGPC, then defence minister George Fernandes had said “the books and documents that were recovered from the Sikh Reference Library, Golden Temple, had been handed over to the CBI by the army”.

But carrying out voluntary religious service at the Golden Temple will not be the prerogative of all Sikh women as only the 'amritdhari', baptized women who follow all religious tenets and the dress code, would be allowed to join the rituals.
Jagir Kaur became SGPC president in 1999 but was unable to get the resolution allowing women to join rituals to be passed.
