SIGINT - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SIGINT stands for SIGnals INTelligence, which is intelligence-gathering by interception of signals, whether by radio interception or other means.
SIGINT is actually a broad discipline under which multiple sub-disciplines fall.
SIGINT became far more central to military (and to some extent diplomatic) intelligence generally with the mechanization of armies, development of blitzkrieg tactics, use of submarine and commerce raiders warfare, and the development of practicable radio communications.

 Sigintel History - HMAS Sydney
Sigint units were able to intercept enemy communications by tuning radio receivers to the frequency of the enemy transmitters, and recording the messages sent by the enemy operators.
Sigint activity was carried out under conditions of very tight security to minimise the risk of the enemy becoming aware that its communications were being exploited, and subsequently changing its communication security practices to deny the Allies continued access to crucial message traffic.
Sigint activity against the Germans was mainly undertaken by the British, although Australian Army and Navy Sigint elements provided support to the UK effort.

 American Geosynchronous SIGINT Satellites
SIGINT satellites called "Jumpseat" were developed to be place into a 12-hour orbit of the Molniya type (39 thousand km apogee, 600 km perigee, 63 degree inclination).
According to the foreign press, the SIGINT system may first have been used for support of combat operations during the Arab-Israeli war of 1974 for monitoring the air defense radars, staff and command posts of the Arab countries, and also for intercepting radio communications, including conversations of Arab pilots in the air.
Starting in 1985 third generation SIGINT satellites began to be deployed, and received the designation "Aquacade." They should have replaced Rhyolite satellites which had expended their consumables and, in distinction to the Chalet satellites, carried out a wider variety of missions in monitoring the radioelectronic situation in the USSR.

 Signals Intelligence
SIGINT is derived from the signals environment that is described by the graphic above.
As much as modern telecommunications technology poses significant challenges to SIGINT, the many languages used in the nations and regions of the world that are of interest to our military and national leaders require NSA to maintain a wide variety of language capabilities.
SIGINT plays a vital role in our national security by employing the right people and using the latest technology to provide America's leaders with the critical information they need to save lives, defend democracy, and promote American values.

 Proper handling of SIGINT/SIGQUIT
As a variant of the former, when the shell receives SIGINT while it is waiting for a child to exit, the shell does not exit immediately.
If the shell recognized that SIGINT was sent and exits after the current foreground process exited (the third way of the four), the editor session will not be disturbed, but things will still not work right.
If the intention of SIGINT is to end your program, you have to exit in a way that the calling programs "sees" that you have been killed.

Although the study group does not believe that the cradle-to-grave approach to a discipline is necessarily the most constructive approach for the future, it has served the nation well in the past and certain elements of the NSA model are worthy of emulation by the rest of the technical intelligence community.
In the broadest sense, SIGINT is a "bridge" between imagery's ability to observe activity and HUMINT's ability to gauge intentions.
This study highlights the need for improved management and focus of SIGINT R&D to ensure that critical areas are adequately funded and the need to reshape the workforce for the 21st century.

The directive specifies that the Director of NSA is to produce SIGINT in response to the objectives, requirements and priorities of the Director of Central Intelligence.
It requires that all SIGINT reports be written "so as to focus solely on the activities of foreign entities and persons and their agents." It also specifies some of the conditions under which U.S. persons can be identified in SIGINT reports--for example, when the communications indicate the person is an agent of a foreign power.
NSA claims that SIGINT reporting related to these cases is limited to "Guatemalan government reaction to U.S. and international human rights concerns," and does not include specific information regarding the circumstances of death or the involvement of Colonel Alpírez.
