Siptu has described the dispute at Irish Ferries as a test of the viability of social partnership.
At the end of a two-day meeting in Dublin Siptu's national executive council said the Irish Ferries' plan was "an outrageous example of the acceleration of the 'race to the bottom' which is well under way in the Irish economy".
In a statement, Siptu's National Executive Council said it was particularly disappointed at the failure of the National Implementation Body to insist on Irish Ferries adhering to the compliance clauses of the Sustaining Progress agreement.

 SIPTU & NUJ
SIPTU is the largest trade union in Ireland and represents some 200,000 workers of all types across all sectors of the Irish economy.
SIPTU and the NUJ argue that employees who generally will have worked for a considerable period with a licensed concern in a franchise area should be covered by TUPE in any relicensing process including situations where the BCI may decide to redraw particular franchise areas.
The NUJ and SIPTU have raised concerns regarding the licensing process in the recent past and would welcome processes that would place transparency and accountability at the centre of the assessment process.

Siptu did not, therefore, want them added to a "long list" of union demands, but required that they be addressed before talks began.
