SMAP is an experimental protocol for testing new mail client/server functionality that's not possible with existing mail access protocols.
SMAP is sufficient for implementing traditional mail access functionality: a hierarchical arrangement of folders; random access to messages in a folder; access individual MIME sections of messages; per-message metadata such as various flags, and a datestamp.
Beyond that, SMAP's primary focus is to serve as an experimental implementation of advanced mail client/server functionality.

The Short and Medium-term Priority Environmental Action Programme (SMAP) is a framework programme of action for the protection of the mediterranean environment, within the context of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership.
It was adopted unanimously by the Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on the Environment, held in Helsinki on the 28 November 1997.
The SMAP is the common basis for environmental purposes (as regards both policy orientation and funding) in the Mediterranean region.

 SMAP - Regional Euro-Mediterranean Programme for the Environment
The SMAP programme constitutes the environmental component of the Euro Mediterranean Partnership.
It builds on the Barcelona Declaration, which «recognised the importance of reconciling economic development with environmental protection, of integrating environmental concerns into the relevant aspects of economic policy and of mitigating any potential negative environmental consequences».
SMAP sets five priorities for national and donor interventions: Integrated Water Management, Integrated Waste Management, Hot Spots (including polluted areas and threatened biodiversity zones), Integrated Coastal Zone Management and Combating Desertification.
