SMPTE color bars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The SMPTE color bars are a type of television test pattern, and is most commonly used in countries where the NTSC video standard is dominant, such as in North America.
Below the main set of seven bars is a strip of blue, magenta, cyan, and white castellations.
To begin, the color bar pattern is sent to a monitor.

NTSC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Color information was added to the fl and white image by adding a color subcarrier of 3.58 MHz to the video signal.
The first color NTSC television camera was the RCA TK-40, used for experimental broadcasts in 1953; an improved version, the TK-40A, introduced in March 1954, was the first commercially available color TV camera.
A short sample of this reference signal is included in the NTSC signal as color burst, located on the back porch of each horizontal line, the time between the end of the horizontal synchronization pulse and of the blanking pulse on each line.

Test card - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most include a set of calibrated color bars which will produce a characteristic pattern of "dot landings" on a vectorscope, allowing chroma and tint to be precisely adjusted between generations of videotape or network feeds.
SMPTE bars--and several other test cards --include analog fl (a flat waveform at 7.5 IRE, or the NTSC setup level), full white (100IRE), and a "sub-fl" or "fler-than-fl" (at 0 IRE), which represents the lowest low-frequency transmission voltage permissible in NTSC broadcast (though the negative excursions of the colorburst signal may go below 0 IRE).
Between the color bars and proper adjustment of brightness and contrast controls to the limits of perception of the first sub-fl bar, an analog receiver (or other equipment like VTRs) may be adjusted to provide impressive fidelity.

Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers or SMPTE (pronounced "simptee" or sometimes "sumptee") (founded in 1916 as the Society of Motion Picture Engineers or SMPE) is an international professional association, based in the United States of America, of engineers working in the motion imaging industries.
SMPTE standards documents are copyrighted and may be purchased from the SMPTE website, or other distributors of technical standards.
SMPTE's educational and professional development activities include technical presentations at regular meetings of its local Sections, annual and biennial conferences in the US and Australia and the SMPTE Journal.

GEKCO VIDEO TEST PATTERN GENERATORS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The picture you see on a color TV is actually formed by three electron beams, one each for red, green and blue color and the image is generated by scanning the beam horizontally and vertically over the screen.
The color subcarrier is used to encode the red, green and blue information on the camera side and is decoded at the TV to recover the primary colors.
SMPTE Bars are split field bars composed of standard EIA 75% amplitude white bars for the top 2/3 of the field, reverse blue bars for the next 1/12 of the field, and the IYQB or “PLUGE” signal for the remainder of the field.

75.75 Color Bars (also known as 75% reduced amplitude bars with a 75% white reference) is a full field color bars test signal composed of a 75% gray bar (75% amplitude, 100% saturation) and 75% color bars (yellow, cyan, green, magenta, red, blue, and fl).
Color bars are often used to test video levels and chrominance relationships.

Remember that even if the color bars are encode and decoded perfectly the color you see on screen can be altered by the accuracy of the phosphors on your display.
The absolute color you see depends finally on how accurately the color primaries are generated in the display, but the bars should look the same color in SD or HD if everything is right with the bars, encoding and decoding.
But the primary colors should not be the same for SD and HD (as shown in the x,y values above) and that is the advantage of displays that can now create 'psuedo" or "effective" SD and HD primaries from their native primary colors.

It is also useful in that the color transitions are at the top and bottom of the picture.
This may be the best option for setting color and tint controls on sets where the on-screen menu covers up the majority of picture area.
In addition to the patch and bar combinations being labeled so that you’ll know where to look when adjusting the color and tint controls, the position of the transition of the colors in the picture might provide another option of seeing beyond on-screen displays that cover up the transitions.

By visually checking the computer generated video colors to the reference color bar, level errors and illegal color values can easily be detected.
When the incoming video signal is also a color bar waveform, from a tape leader for example, a more accurate assessment of video levels and color hue and saturation can be made.
This is especially helpful in adjusting time base or color corrector controls to their proper settings.

 Accessing Canon XL1 Color Bars
Full-field color bars are a Canon XL1 accessory function that is readily available on the camera even though no instruction is provided in the Canon XL1 manual.
It seems safe to say, however, that though they are not as reliable as true SMPTE color bars, they are better than no color bars at all, the alternative being eyeballing color correction without any video color reference at all.
Place the color bar chart in front of your XL1-S or XL1 camera (or other video camera) and shoot it under the same lighting conditions and using the same white balance as you expect to have for the actual video footage you are about to shoot.

Synchronization of the refresh rate to the power cycle also helped kinescope cameras record early live television broadcasts, as it was very simple to synchronize a film camera to capture one frame of video on each film cell by using the alternating current frequency as a shutter trigger.
First, the chrominance signal was interpreted as luminance by TV sets that were in use at the time of the introduction of color TV and which didn´t have notch filters to filter out the chrominance information, causing dots to appear on strongly contrasting edges (which is high-frequency video information).
The remaining vertical blanking interval lines are typically used for datacasting or ancillary data such as video editing timestamps (vertical interval timecodes or SMPTE timecodes on lines 12-14.
