Alpermann+Velte time code and ancillary data systems, projects: time code basic principles
The Time Code of the machine being played is continuously read and the value is transmitted to the generator.
Normally therefore, the Time Code - generator must be controlled by an built-in time reference, in the form either of a quartz pulse or the mains frequency.
The Time Code used for the video and sound alike is of extreme importance for a further main application of the Time Code.

  Purchase - Womble Multimedia, Inc.
Time code, sometimes known as SMPTE time code or SMPTE code, is an electronic signal which is used to identify a precise location on time-based media such as audio or video tape or in digital systems.
Referred to as LTC or longitudinal time code, this signal comes in several different formats relating to the number of frames per second and, in the case of color video (29.97 f/s), whether it is "non-drop" or "drop" frame.
A time code refresher is sometimes used to amplify and alter the on/off slope of the pulses to reduce the amount of errors.

 SMPTE TIME CODE
SMPTE time code is a digital signal whose ones and zeroes assign a number to every frame of video, representing hours, minutes, seconds, frames, and some additional user/specified information such as tape number.
Longitudinal time code (LTC) is recorded along the length of the tape in the form of a modulated audio signal.
For this reason, SMPTE time code allows you to choose whether you want time to be correct (but with some of the numbers skipped), or have a sequential number for every video frame (but not have the numbers accurately tell you the length of your show).

SMPTE/EBU time code is a binary code which becomes an embedded part of a picture or sound recording and assigns a specific address to each moment of time in a recording.
Because film and video have different frame counts and run at different speeds in these countries, SMPTE time code has three versions: non-drop frame and drop frame (based on a frame count of 30 fps) and 24 frame (developed for film and based on a frame count of 24 fps).
Time code was originally developed to edit film and video, which run at differing frame counts.

Be that as it may, SMPTE time codes count 30 of these frames and deem that to make a second.
It is worth noting that in neither case is the SMPTE time-code an accurate clock; in the first case, it runs slow, and in the second, the adjustments are abrupt and periodic - and still not quite accurate.

 MIDI Time Code and Cueing
Time Code is relatively straightforward: hours, minutes, seconds and frame numbers (approximately 1/30 of a second) are encoded and distributed throughout the MIDI system so that all the units know exactly what time it is.
It is the responsibility of the time code reader to insure that MTC is being properly interpreted.
Data sent from the MIDI Time Code Converter to the Master Control/Cue Sheet (note that this may be a MTC-equipped tape deck or mixing console as well as a cue-sheet) is always MIDI Time Code.

 SMPTE and other Time Codes
SMTPE time code (and MIDI Time Code (MTC) and other time codes) is used to synchronize video/film and music, but it is also used to synchronize different tracks on a multi-track tape recorders.
SMPTE time code, otherwise known as LTC (Longitudinal Time Code), has been commonly used to synchronize tape decks and lots of other audio and video equipment for the past 20 years or so.
SMPTE Time Code is time stamped, so no matter where you start on the tape, devices which are locked to SMPTE will jump to the correct point in time.

SMPTE time code - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SMPTE timecode is a set of cooperating standards to label individual frames of video or film with a timecode defined by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers in the SMPTE 12M specification.
In general, SMPTE timecode frame rate information is implicit, known from the rate of arrival of the timecode from the medium, or other metadata encoded in the medium.
SMPTE timecodes are often time code not specified by SMPTE.

Detailed Specification (Supplement to MIDI 1.0) 12 February 1987 Justification For MIDI Time Code and Cueing The merit of implementing the MIDI Time Code proposal within the current MIDI specification is as follows: SMPTE has become the de facto timing reference standard in the professional audio world and in almost the entire video world.
Time Code is relatively straightforward: hours, minutes, seconds and frame numbers (approximately 1/30 of a second) are encoded and distributed throughout the MIDI system so that all the units know exactly what time it is. Set Up, however, is where MTC gains its power.
Actual time is in 1/100th frame resoultion, for those units capable of handling bits or some other form of sub-frame resolution, and should otherwise be self-explanatory.
